Pete Crow-Armstrong became the first Chicago Cub in franchise history to join the 40-40 club when he stole his 40th base in the first inning of the regular-season finale at Wrigley Field Thursday. The 24-year-old reached the mark after drawing a leadoff walk from Tyler Phillips and swiping second on the next pitch to Seiya Suzuki, finishing the season with 40 steals in 47 attempts. Crow-Armstrong already set a career high by hitting his 45th home run during Sunday’s game at Cincinnati, giving him at least 45 homers and 40 steals for the year. He is the seventh player in MLB history to record a 40-homer, 40-steal season, joining names such as Shohei Ohtani and Ronald Acuña Jr. Fans chanted MVP and the Wrigley Field videoboard highlighted the feat as Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised Crow-Armstrong, saying Everything Pete has done this year has been really incredible. Crow-Armstrong was a 2020 first-round pick, No. 19 overall by the New York Mets, and was traded to the Cubs in 2021 for Javier Báez and Trevor Williams; he also spent six games at Single-A St. Lucie this season before a May shoulder injury.
