Diesel prices hit record $6.51, lawmakers push export ban

U.S. diesel averaged a record $6.51 a gallon Monday, and President Donald Trump publicly called for a ban on diesel exports as a way to lower domestic prices. Rep. Ashley Hinson urged the House to return “immediately” to pause diesel exports, suspend the federal gas tax, expand E15 and biodiesel, and craft diesel relief for truckers and farmers. Speaker Mike Johnson has canceled the remainder of the September session and the House is not expected to return until November 9, making near-term legislative action unlikely. Energy and market experts warn an export ban could backfire because refineries produce diesel and gasoline together; cutting diesel exports could prompt refiners to curb overall runs and lift gasoline prices. The American Petroleum Institute notes the United States supplies roughly 20 percent of globally traded seaborne diesel, a removal of that supply could deepen global shortages. Hinson is running in a competitive Iowa Senate race and has emphasized higher fuel and food costs; a recent Marist poll showed her trailing Democrat Josh Turek by 8 points.

WSJ: President Zelenskyy confirmed that Trump asked him to stop striking Russian oil refineries, citing rising diesel prices. Zelenskyy’s response was straightforward: “Diesel may matter to some, but our lives matter more.” #ProudBlue #Pinks #SheShed
