Nicky Hager book launch at Unity Books in Wellington tonight

journalismSep 22, 20261053,079

Investigative journalist Nicky Hager will launch a new book tonight at Unity Books in central Wellington at 6pm. Details of the book remain under wraps, but Taxpayers' Union co-founder and chief executive Jordan Williams acknowledged rumours that his organisation may feature and said he was "flattered we may have finally made the cut" and that there is "nothing to hide". Williams pointed to a July 26, 2023 press release in which the Taxpayers' Union said Hager had been approaching former staff and outlined alleged topics planned for the book, including connections with other groups, donor secrecy, foreign influence and funding. Taxpayers' Union chair Laurie Kubiak previously accused Hager of "personal animosity" and defended the group's transparency, noting it has hundreds of thousands of subscribed supporters and more than 23,000 donors. Hager's past books, such as Dirty Politics and Seeds of Distrust, have influenced election campaigns; in 2018 police apologised and paid substantial damages after unlawfully searching Hager's home during the investigation connected to Dirty Politics. Tonight's launch will reveal whether Hager's new reporting follows up on the 2023 claims about the Taxpayers' Union or pursues other targets.
