Ed Sheeran says friends and family 'abandoned' him amid tour fallout

At Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, Ed Sheeran told a visibly emotional crowd he felt his family and friends were abandoning him amid the fallout from removing opener Macklemore from the Loop Tour. Sheeran said the promoter made the call after venues including Gillette Stadium refused to host Macklemore following his MetLife Stadium comments calling for a “free Palestine,” and he noted “50,000 people who haven’t abandoned me.” Several scheduled openers walked in solidarity after Macklemore’s removal, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Sheeran’s longtime backing band Beoga, which Sheeran replaced with hastily assembled musicians; he performed the Philadelphia show with no opening act. A pro-Palestine protest gathered outside the venue before the concert. Opening the show, Sheeran departed from his usual aversion to political commentary, calling the October 7 Nova festival attack “horrific” and describing the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” then apologized within the set for that political preamble because “families didn’t buy a ticket to hear that first bit of the show.” By the end of the night he was in tears and said the evening gave him hope despite the turmoil; his cousin Jethro Sheeran, known as Alonestar, had publicly called him a “coward.”

🇬🇧 🗣️ @marinapurkiss.bsky.social: “His nice guy image has collapsed — It’s not that Ed Sheeran didn’t speak up on 🇵🇸, it’s that he allowed the silencing of someone who did… If you don’t have a position on this now you’re going to lose respect. He has F.U. money to take a stand.”

Ed Sheeran's Philly concert is over but big questions remain What was the role of Eagles' owner Jeff Lurie in the cancellation of Macklemore? How can there be censorship in a stadium owned by the city where American freedom was founded? My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/eagl...

The issue isn’t that Ed Sheeran didn’t say anything about Palestine… It’s that he allowed the silencing of someone who did, when (let’s be honest) he’s has more than enough FU money to have taken a principled stand.
