Bird of the Day, theme 'Caption That Bird'

natureSep 20, 202624714,055

Bird of the Day is running the prompt Caption That Bird, a daily community theme calling for bird photos paired with a single witty caption and alt text descriptions. Entries today pair humorous lines with images of species from a Stonechat perched among bramble berries to a sleepy spoonbill and a pigeon skillfully landing and delighting the cats. Other standout posts include a barred owl captioned Who's there, a fledgling White-collared Manakin from Costa Rica doing an excited pose, and a northern cardinal compared to the Heat Miser. Helen Bennett is hosting and reiterates the rules: post a bird that makes you smile, include only a witty caption and hashtags, and add alt text so everyone can enjoy the photo.

A male violet-green swallow perched on a thin branch with his head tucked under his open wing, as if he's sniffing his armpit. He has a white belly and lower face, a dark cap, and iridescent green on the top of his wings leading to a violet color. There are thin, bare branches below him and in the top left corner. The background is blurred lime green leaves with a bit of blue sky.

no notes. the natural musk of panic is extremely attractive to swallows. (do not fact-check this.)

Outstanding. Knob. A British epithet? I have heard it before, have no idea what it means, but have always liked it.😆

Roseate Spoonbill. They feed by sloshing their slightly open bill from side to side in shallow water and when something hits their bill, it snaps shut automatically. They will be more pink or less pink depending on how many shrimp they eat.

JoJoSmile1

Michael, where did you see this hlorious pink spoonbill?

I just wonder if @brennanleemulligan.bsky.social knows about this kind of bird

Are the eyebrows too much? I'm worried they're a bit much. 🪶 #CaptionThatBird #BirdOfTheDay

A Mountain Chickadee perched on a small dead branch. It is facing the camera showing off its dramatic black and white coloration. The top of its head to just below its eyes is jet black with dramatic white eyebrows swept back from its beak above its eyes and back across the top if its head. Its cheeks are bright white. Its bib is black. Its breast and belly are very light grey. Its wings are very dark grey. Its eyes, beak, and feet are black. The background is soft sage green with dead branches crossing through it.

A beautiful pigeon, skillfully landing, arrives to delight the cats and me with its presence.🤎 #BirdOfTheDay #CaptionThatBird #Birds #PigeonLovers #Stunday #Photography #ECK

A close-up, medium shot captures a feral pigeon as it prepares to land on a white metal railing.
The pigeon is positioned horizontally across the upper half of the frame, angled slightly toward the left. It has its head tucked downward, eyes focused on its landing spot. Its feathers are a mix of dark slate-gray on its head and body, while its upper wings feature a mottled pattern of reddish-brown and grayish-white.
The bird's wings are partially extended, and its bright orange-pink legs and webbed feet are outstretched as it grips the smooth, circular railing. The background is a soft, out-of-focus blur of lush green grass and trees in the yard. The lighting is bright and even, highlighting the texture of the feathers and the vibrant color of the pigeon's legs.

A western grebe (top) and Clark’s grebe (bottom) are holding each other’s beaks while swimming in a pond. Both birds have a white front, black top of head and back of neck, red eyes and gray back. The Clark’s eye is in the white part of the head, the western’s in the black part. They are not “kissing” but are fighting over a nest site.
