Smoke and flames seen near Riyadh’s King Khalid Airport after air-raid alerts

A column of black smoke and flames was seen near Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on Saturday after Saudi Civil Defence issued overnight phone alerts warning of potential aerial danger and later gave an all-clear. Residents heard apparent explosions and reported windows shaking; FlightRadar24 logged delays and cancellations at the airport. An AFP journalist and other reports described firefighters extinguishing a burnt-out fuel tank belonging to Saudi state oil company Aramco near the airport. The alerts were the first time residents had been told to stay indoors since a recent escalation in attacks by Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen, who said they had thwarted Saudi strikes on Sanaa and claimed responsibility for other recent strikes. Houthi military spokesman Yahya al-Sarea said Saudi forces carried out 300 strikes across Yemen in the past week and warned of retaliation. Unconfirmed AFP reports quoting military sources said fighting in Yemen killed 48 people on Saturday, and the UN migration agency said recent fighting has displaced more than 104,796 people. Flight disruptions at King Khalid International are the immediate consequence, and Saudi authorities have not yet issued an official comment on the cause of the smoke and explosions.
