Bird of the Day, theme 'Paridae'

natureSep 18, 20261918,731

Bird of the Day is a daily community theme; today’s prompt is Paridae, with an alternate theme of Pigeons & Doves. Participants are posting field and backyard bird photography focused on tits, titmice, and chickadees alongside pigeon and dove alternatives. Look for tufted titmouse and coal tit shots, black-capped and Carolina chickadees perched on branches or bathing, a blue tit at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, and marsh tit photos among brambles. Alt entries include a collared dove on a palm stump, a zebra dove in Moorea with deformed feet, and juveniles such as a band-tailed pigeon.

Chicka-dee-dee-dee. #BirdOfTheDay #Paridae 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) perched on a thin vertical forked branch, facing the camera with its head turned slightly to one side. It is a very small songbird with a black cap and throat bib separated by a broad white cheek patch, a short dark bill, and pale buff-washed white underparts that look fluffed out against the cold. Its dark feet grip the rough bark, and the background is a soft wash of warm orange and brown

Good evening, JB, although it is late morning still for me... 🦋

I want to post a picture of a NYC pigeon. They look nothing like this. They’re big, ugly, grizzled. They take no shit. They don’t fly away as you walk by. They’ve lived a hard life and have been thru & seen some stuff They’re the Sean Penn of birds.

BelleAB1

Great shot! He’s posing so nicely for you, JB! 🐦‍⬛👌💙

The one thing I give credit to the US is using the name Chickadee rather than the UK name

In the winter, we hand feed these in my backyard, in southern Ontario when the kids hear them, they get out the sunflower seeds!

Zebra dove in Moorea for #BirdOfTheDay alt #Pigeons&Doves This little cutie has deformed feet but managed great. #FlyDay #scape #birds #photography #EastCoastKin #ECK #PhotographersUnited

A small dove standing on a wooden deck in the shadows. The bird has a beige head, light brown breast, and black-and-white stripes on the back of the neck and wings. There's a beautiful pale blue outline around its eyes and at the beginning of its beak. The right foot is missing all of its toes and left is missing some. The bird is mostly facing the camera but the head is turned to the left.

🪶 Rob has chosen #Paridae as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any of the Tit, Titmice and Chickadees Alt. #Pigeons&Doves I’m going with the alternative with this shot of a Collared Dove on the stump of a palm tree in a park #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #flyday #scape

A Collared Dove perched on the stump of a palm tree in a park. The bird is left of centre of the shot, sitting on the stump of a limb of a palm tree. It is facing right so that its right side is showing. It is a medium sized bird with pale grey-beige plumage and a thin black beak. It has a dark red eye and a black collar on the nape of the neck. The outer wingtips have a grey outline. It’s deer can be seen partially hanging over the stump and appear a darkish colour. The tail is obscured. Behind the dove another palm trunk with a light, sandy appearance travels from the bottom left to top left of the frame, tilted slightly left as it goes up. The background is palm leaves, out of focus, taking up the entire scene with white light visible through the gaps.

Rob’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Paridae, and of the species. The Alt theme is #Pigeons&Doves, any Pigeon or Dove will do. I’ve gone with the Alt theme. A Collared Dove does its best impression of the angel Gabriel - ‘I bring you good tidings of great joy, Barrie is putting out the bird seed’ 😊

A Collared Dove hovers above its partner who is sitting on the back of a garden chair. The Doves are grey in colour with a black and white collar on the back of the neck and black and white tail feathers. The foliage in the background is dark green.

You've really given that dove a glow-up by catching their best side; all my pigeon flight shots looks ridiculous lol, but now I realise I'm just not catching them right lol!

Here's a black-capped chickadee I saw for Rob's #BirdOfTheDay today. Not the sharpest shot as I was fooling around with an ancient lens, but I like how the branch curves around it. #Paridae #Photography #Birds #Chickadees

A single small bird with black and white head and brownish body stands on a small branch. A larger branch makes a half curve (almost spiral like) around it starting from the top middle and ending at the bottom middle. Behind is bright green.

A pigeon. Brave. A communicator. Intelligent. Beautiful. Soft-spoken. A creature that mates for life. Unattainable until she has a reason to trust you. 🩶 ― Jamie McGuire #BirdOfTheDay #Pigeons&Doves #Photography #EastCoastKin

This is a beautiful, close-up photograph of a pigeon resting peacefully on a railing, captured from a slightly low angle that highlights its gentle dignity. The pigeon is positioned in the center of the frame, facing away but turning its head gracefully to the left to look back. Its plumage is a rich, layered tapestry of deep charcoal grays and slate blues, with the feathers on its back appearing incredibly soft and downy. Towards the base of its back, there is a striking contrast where a few pure white feathers emerge, neatly tucked against the darker gray tail feathers that drape straight down. The bird's head is beautifully detailed, showcasing a slender, dark grey beak with a soft white patch where it meets the face. Its most captivating feature is its eye—a bright, luminous ring of vibrant orange-red that stands out brilliantly against its dark feathers, conveying a sense of quiet alertness and curiosity. A delicate hint of iridescence catches the light along the back of its neck, hinting at the glossy purples and greens typical of these resilient birds. The pigeon is perched on a clean, white horizontal railing, with just its bright pinkish-red claws visible grasping the edge. The railing has a series of small, neat circular cutouts along its lower portion. Behind the bird, the background is a soft, completely blurred wash of vibrant early autumn greens and hints of yellow, a lush canopy of trees. This gentle bokeh effect makes the dark, velvety colors of the pigeon stand out beautifully.

And she will shit on you from her perch above while in your hammock reading page 382 of Playing for the Ashes. But she doesn't know better and all I do in return is, ironically, flip her the bird and wash my arm.

I love both your capture & heading. The pigeon's fantastic & words are true. Well done!
