Wandsworth 94% council-tax rise prompts Kemi Badenoch legal action

Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch has instructed lawyers after Wandsworth Council proposed a 94% council tax rise, saying the increase is "outrageous" and driven by central government decisions rather than local choice. Wandsworth, a south-west London borough run by the Conservatives, says planned changes to the funding formula will strip about 84 million pounds a year from its budget by the end of the next three years, a cut it describes as roughly 40% of its funding. The council’s proposed 958 pound increase for an average Band D property would be split roughly half by the council and half by the mayor of London, taking what is now just over 1,000 pounds close to double. The government defended the reforms as "fixing an outdated funding system so funding goes where need is greatest." Wandsworth’s Tory deputy leader said the council will continue to challenge the government, and other London councils including Westminster, Richmond and Kensington and Chelsea are considering similar challenges under the Sustainable Communities Act. A final decision on Wandsworth’s rise is expected early next year, and Labour opposition leader on the council Simon Hogg called the proposal "outrageous" and "stunning."
