New wild cat species, the Tilcayo tiger, discovered in Bolivia

Scientists have identified a previously unknown small spotted cat from Bolivia as a new species, Leopardus tilcayo, the first wholly new felid described in more than 100 years. The lead author, Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz of the Bolivian Felids Research Program, first encountered the animal in 2016 at Senda Verde wildlife sanctuary after a local man brought in a kitten he had found on a road. Photographs and later genomic analysis conducted with geneticist Eduardo Eizirik and co-lead Jonas Lescroart placed the animal apart from the well-known tiger cat complex, showing larger rosettes and distinct genetics from Leopardus tigrinus. The researchers published the finding in the journal Current Biology and adopted the local name tilcayo for the scientific name Leopardus tilcayo. So far the species is known from Bolivia’s Yungas cloud forest on the eastern Andes slope, but researchers say basic facts about its diet, reproduction, range, and ecology remain unknown. The paper calls for targeted field and genetic work to map the species’ distribution and understand its conservation needs.

BREAKING NEWS: New cat species just dropped! 🧪 What is a tilcayo, exactly? Well, it's a small wild cat in the genus Leopardus and a member of the tiger cat species complex, but it is NOT a tigrina, oncilla, kodkod, Geoffroy's cat... www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/arti...
