Universal Pictures is reconsidering the international release of Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk after buying non-U.S. distribution rights three years ago, The Hollywood Reporter and Folha report. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week to positive audience response and portrays Elon Musk critically, including accounts from people close to him and his outreach to right-wing governments. Universal will not confirm a release date and declined to comment to The Hollywood Reporter. In the United States Bleecker Street is handling distribution and the film is due to debut there next month. Reports say Universal paid millions for the non-U.S. rights and could owe the filmmakers a kill fee if it declines to release, allowing the filmmakers to resell the rights elsewhere.

“If Universal opts against releasing the movie, it would mark an extraordinary reversal at a moment when media companies are already under scrutiny for bowing to political pressure.”
