Mark Carney addresses European Parliament on closer Canada‑EU ties

financeSep 17, 20261558,043

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen used her State of the European Union address in Strasbourg to press for closer ties with Canada while setting priorities on online child protection, climate change and Russia’s war on Ukraine. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was the special guest as von der Leyen spent well over an hour laying out her vision for the EU. Her speech also touched on artificial intelligence, worrying drone incidents on EU territory, conflict in the Middle East and international trade tensions. German officials in Berlin oppose any fast track toward an EU “associate membership” for Canada, warning that Ottawa risks angering other partners if the bloc moves too quickly. The commission’s proposals so far are aspirational and lack detailed definitions of what “associate member” status would mean for Canada. Von der Leyen framed the agenda as part of Europe’s broader fight for its values and democracies and closed with her rallying cry, “Long Live Europe.”

Canada is building a deeper alliance with the EU so that we may write our own futures — with our values, and our ambitions.

Carney to the EU: "We believe that a strong economy is not an end in itself, but the means to a just society. We are committed stewards of our natural heritage. We believe that our prosperity grows when it is shared." I wish the Carney we hear in speeches was the Carney who governs Canada.
