Peter Max died Monday in Manhattan at 88. The German-born pop and psychedelic artist rose to prominence in the 1960s with Day-Glo posters and paintings of flowers, butterflies, rainbows, stars and planets that became a ubiquitous visual shorthand for the counterculture. Max built a lucrative licensing business that put his imagery on a wide range of consumer goods and made his work widely recognizable beyond the gallery world. He produced commissioned images for major events and institutions, including a 1970 recruiting poster for the U.S. Information Agency and a poster for the 1994 World Cup, and served as official artist for events such as the Olympics, the Super Bowl and the Indianapolis 500. Colleagues and admirers recalling Max describe him as bright, effusive and a maker of an iconic, generational visual vocabulary that many people encountered in childhood.
