Bird of the Day, theme 'Birds With Berries'

natureSep 16, 202620410,602

Today's Bird of the Day is the Birds With Berries theme, asking for any bird captured with berries in the frame. Contributors are posting close-up bird photography and yard shots featuring birds feeding on fruit and berry-laden shrubs. Standout entries include cedar waxwings fiddling with American holly berries, an American robin pictured with fruit, and an alt-theme submission of a sandhill crane for BirdyLongLegs. Look for other specific examples such as a chestnut-backed chickadee with berries and a black-throated blue warbler eating berries.

I know that so called “Great” blue heron. Between you and I…serial adulterer. Jess sayin’

I love photographing these birds. Here’s my most recent blue heron shot; surveying the pond, looking for breakfast…

Not the heron we deserve... but the heron we need.

We love these birds. They arrive by the dozen on our Blossoming Crabapple tree every spring to eat the little 🍎 🙂

A cedar waxwing for the #BirdsWithBerries theme of #BirdOfTheDay #birds #nature #photography #ECK

A waxwing is perched on a cluster of bright red toyon berries. While it is leaning downwards, it is tossing its head back and has its beak open to move a berry down its throat. The berry is hanging in the air within its open beak.

#Birds Helen Bennett 🌿 @helenbennett.bsky.social says today's #BirdOfTheDay Alt: theme is #BirdyLongLegs Any bird with legs that look way too long for its body! The Lesser Yellowlegs with its bright yellow, stilt like legs perfectly adapted for wading in the shallows.

A heavily spotted bird with bright yellow legs, wades to the left with the sunlight coming from the right. It has a large dark eye with a complete white eye ring, long black tipped pointed beak and is primarily white with a multitude of chocolate brown spots covering it the head, neck, breast and back.

Roadrunners are known for their strong legs that propel them quickly in an arid terrain, as well as assist them with jumping to higher ground. For the #birdoftheday theme of #birdylonglegs #birds #roadrunner #protectnature #EastCoastKin

A roadrunner jumps up from the ground to climb to the top of a fence post. The bird is in the air as it is about to make contact with the post.

Not only long legs, but also, apparently, the power of levitation! Terrific shots, Amy.

Great shots Amy. I shall resist the urge to make that noise. I'm an adult, after all. I think.

A Black-throated Blue Warbler in my yard (!!!) eating berries from the Devil’s Walkingstick tree For the #BirdOfTheDay theme of #BirdsWithBerries #birds 🌿

Here's a #BirdyLongLegs for Helen's alternate #BirdOfTheDay today. I find these sandhill cranes to be very beautiful until they start making noise 😀 #Photography #Birds #SandhillCranes

A single sandhill crane stands on a dirt road with its back to the camera. Its head is turned facing the left of the frame, and a single bright eye looks back at the camera. The rising sun lights up the right side and its neck and head.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay ALT theme is #BirdyLongLegs. I think this snowy egret qualifies. Yep, I post lots of images of this species. For two reasons. They are abundant and they are incredibly beautiful. #photography #wildlife #ECK #birds #BirdsInFlight #birdsky #birders #conservation #biodiversity

Cats Are Better Than Men Because1

Florida has some seriously leggy birds.

The Dread Poet Michael1

I'd like an evolutionary biologist to explicate those bright yellow feet at the ends off those black legs 🤔 They're also adaptable to city life - I have several photos of them in the city of Tallahassee and not on a lake

Jan1

Michael, thanks to your beautiful photos many others here on Bluesky are posting their bird pics to the enjoyment of so many of us. Thanks. jan

Completely agree with the snowy sentiment. Excellent shot 😍

#birdoftheday #birdswithberries One day I came upon a berry bush full of Cedar Waxwings. They sat there even while I stood close with my camera. The bush, the birds, the sun, and I were all in the best possible arrangement. And the pictures came out. I still don't believe it!😄

🪶 Helen has chosen #BirdsWithBerries as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any bird captured with berries Alt. is #BirdyLongLegs; any bird with legs that look way too long for its body. A Redwing feeding on Ivy Berries #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky

A Redwing sitting on top of a clump of Ivy with a berry in its mouth. The bird is close up, centre of the shot, in side profile facing to the right so its right side is visible. It has a brown head with a prominent white/cream eyebrow streak. The back and tail are brown. Its flank/under its wings are an orangey red. The throat, chest and underparts are whitish, heavily streaked with brown spots. Its beak is open as it holds an Ivy berry and its yellow tongue can be seen between its beak and protruding beyond the berry. The bottom half of the shot is covered in a clump of Ivy leaves littered with berries and the birds legs and the end of its tail are obscured by some of them. The background is a white sky with three bare, out of focus branches through it.
