House panel recommends holding Leon Black in contempt

The House Oversight Committee voted unanimously 41-0 to recommend that billionaire financier Leon Black be held in contempt of Congress after he refused to comply with subpoenas seeking his testimony and nondisclosure agreements in the committee's investigation of Jeffrey Epstein. Committee chair James Comer said in the chamber that "Subpoenas are not suggestions; they carry the force of law and require full compliance" and argued Black's testimony was "crucial" because of his long personal relationship with Epstein. Comer and the committee say Black produced only one NDA and did not appear for a scheduled deposition on September 3, and Black has sued to block the subpoenas as invalid and overly broad. Black has denied wrongdoing and said he had no knowledge of Epstein's crimes; his attorneys called the committee's contempt markup "a complete abomination." The committee voted to move its report to the full House; the speaker's office had not responded about whether the lower chamber will consider the contempt measure.
