Bird of the Day, theme 'Silhouette'

natureSep 15, 202626412,665

Today's Bird of the Day theme is Silhouette, with an alternate theme of Finches. Contributors are sharing backlit, sunset, and high-contrast profiles of birds in song, flight, or perched on branches alongside close-up finch portraits. Look for a Tufted Duck heading home across a lake at sunset, a row of silhouetted Snow Geese at dusk, and finch entries like a rose-breasted grosbeak cracking a sunflower seed and a Greenfinch garden visitor. Other notable silhouettes include a sandhill crane in flight and a great egret perched on a dead tree, giving strong graphic shapes against sky and water.

#Birds Atlantic Birding @atlanticbirding.bsky.social says today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme Alt. is #Finches; any bird from the finch family. Taken in July, a male House Finch. They are less of a presence during the summer months when the Crows are nesting.

A male House Finch stands with its back to the camera & head turned to the right. The crown & throat are a brilliant red, the cheek, & back a light brown, the flight feathers a darker brown edged in white.

Is this a house finch? Great shot.

Grosbeaks are #Finches as I recently learned, so this one of the rose-breasted variety is cracking open a sunflower seed in celebration of making it to today’s #BirdOfTheDay ALT theme. #birds #backyardbirds #birdphotography #ECK 🪶

A male rose-breasted grosbeak perches on a feeder facing the camera to show his rosey breast pattern below a black head. His large pink beak is cracking open a sunflower seed.

Not nearly as good of a pic as yours, but I saw one for the 1st time earlier this summer. Their colors are stricking.

A lesser goldfinch for the #Finches theme of #BirdOfTheDay #birds #nature #photography #ECK

A male lesser goldfinch is perched at the end of a dried weed stalk. He has a yellow throat, breast, and belly, green head and back, and black cap.

Nothing lesser about that goldfinch, what a beauty.

I have quite a few that like my feeders at various times of the year.

Great shot Aintright, lovely bird

Barrie Cull1

Lovely photo Aintright. At first glance I read that as ‘Barrie the Bullfinch’ 😂 He’s certainly more handsome than me though 🤣

Mary DeVries1

Bold, beautiful Bertie. What a great photo.

It makes you wonder if dinosaurs were multicolored with mating rituals like their descendants.

🪶 Good Morning, Happy Tuesday Everyone! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Silhoutte; any bird in silhouette Alt. is #Finches; any bird from the finch family - A Tufted Duck heads home across the lake at sunset - A Linnet in song in the sunshine #birds #ECK #birdphotography #naturephotography

A Tufted duck in silhouette, paddling away from the shore at sunset. The bird is in the centre of the shot, paddling away from camera with its head turned back to the camera over its left shoulder. Its reflection can be seen in the water behind it.
The setting sunlight on the water gives off a metallic gold/bronze effect. In the foreground are vertical reed stems, also in silhouette, coming up a quarter of the frame on the right and about halfway on the left.

Sorry folks that hashtag should read #Silhouette! Too early for proof-reading!!!

Gorgeous captures, AB! The Tufted Duck image is wonderfully serene.

Great photos and theme AB 😀. I think we have all wished for an edit button at time or two. Hope you have a great rest of the day. 😃😊

Crossbills on a dirt road. These members of the finch family have unique beaks to help them eat pinecones which make up the bulk of their diet. For the #birdoftheday theme of #finches #birds #crossbill #protectnature #EastCoastKin

Several crossbills are on the ground. Tire tracks are visible in the mud in which they are likely seeking minerals or insects to supplement their diet

Very impressive capture. Their colours stand out nicely against the muddy surroundings.

A spectacular sunset with silhouetted Snow Geese. I love silhouettes so much! #birds #BirdOfTheDay #silhouette #SunsetAndSilhouettes 🌿

A flock of geese in shallow water at sunset. The water reflects pink below and orange above and the silhouettes are black and dark blue, making a very vibrant photo.

A #SilverGull contemplates the commencement of a new day. Thanks AB #BirdOfTheDay #Silhouette Alt #Finches #Birds #Sunrise #ECK #Australia

The silhouette of a Silver Gull is on the right, standing on a fence rail. He appears to be watching the bright yellow sun appear above the horizon. The sky surrounding the rising sun is a light amber colour. On the right, top of the photo there are a few clouds. Along the bottom a single broken wave rolls towards the shore. The ocean shines a silvery-blue colour. (It's hard trying to describe colours.)

A bird in silhouette on a thin branch that cuts diagonally across the photo from the top left corner to the bottom right. Its body faces away from the camera, and its head is turned to the left so you can see its beak. It has a scalloped tail. There are a few palm-like pointy leaves in the top-left corner in silhouette. Blurred palm leaves in shades of green and brown adorn the top-right corner and side. The sky is blue and cloudless.

For today's #BirdOfTheDay from Atlantic Birding. Really like how this downy woodpecker photo turned out. #Silhouette #Photography #Birds #Woodpeckers #ClassicMono

A black and white photo of a downy woodpecker in silhouette on the side of a tree which covers the right half of the frame. The left half is gray skies and there is a series of leaves on vine crawling down the side of the tree, ending at the woodpecker who is looking up at the end of the vine.
