Alberta NDP candidate Kyle Campbell won the Calgary-Shaw byelection, unofficial Elections Alberta results show, earning 7,461 of 16,002 votes (about 47 percent) and defeating UCP candidate Mike Derry by 582 votes. The result flips a seat the UCP held after winning it in 2019 and 2023; it is the first time the NDP has won Calgary-Shaw since 2015. The seat was vacant after former UCP MLA and cabinet minister Rebecca Schulz resigned earlier this year, triggering the byelection. The unofficial count shows the UCP finished with 6,879 votes; other totals cited in reporting include 978 for the newTory candidate and 602 for the Liberal candidate. NDP leader Naheed Nenshi said the result shows there are no safe UCP seats in the city, and commentator Dave Cournoyer framed the outcome as a backlash against Premier Danielle Smith’s separation referendum. Party strategists and provincial campaigns are expected to reassess messaging and turnout plans ahead of the next provincial votes.

This by-election in Calgary’s deep suburbs, in a seat UCP won last time by 14%, had potential to become either a clear warning about Danielle Smith and referendum politics in urban Alberta, or about the NDP leadership of Naheed Nenshi. And well whaddya know. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

As I watch the results of the Calgary Shaw by-election trickle in, I suspect, and perhaps more importantly, I hope that several political parties will be holding strategy meetings first thing tomorrow morning and taking a hard look at their respective choices of party leaders.
