Bird of the Day, theme 'Mamas & Papas'

Bird of the Day is a daily community theme today called Mamas & Papas, asking photographers to show a male and female of the same species together. The gallery focuses on parenting and courtship scenes: nesting or brooding pairs, courting displays, and parent-offspring groups. Notable posts include a resident Bald Eagle pair perched overlooking the river, a mated pair of great blue herons showing affection at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Florida, and Agami Herons preparing for nesting season in Costa Rica. Other entries show courting rainbow bee-eaters, Egyptian Geese with their brood, trumpeter swans with cygnets, and robins in a hawthorn bush.

Both birds have a dark double crest on their heads and a chestnut/black collar on their necks. They have white cheeks and a long, slender bill. The neck is long and dark at the back and light at the front. The body is dark brown with a pale front. The Grebettes are black and white in a streaking pattern, giving them the name ‘Humbugs’
The bird on the right is offering a fish twice the size of the chicks heads.
The rest of the shot is of lake water littered with different kinds of low growing pond weed which breaks up the surface of the water.
