Kimi Antonelli wins Spanish Grand Prix, extends championship lead

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring after McLaren's Lando Norris lost the lead because of the timing of a virtual safety car on lap 15. Norris had started from pole and was more than six seconds clear when the VSC was called after Lance Stroll stopped, but he had already passed the pit entry so Antonelli and Max Verstappen pitted under the VSC and gained time. Norris then suffered a slow stop that took seven seconds instead of the usual two, rejoined in fifth and could only recover to third on a track where overtaking proved extremely difficult. Antonelli claimed his eighth win in 14 races this season and extended his championship lead to 81 points over team-mate George Russell; Lewis Hamilton retired after six laps with a brake failure and finished 101 points behind Antonelli. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who began the race on hard tyres, stayed out through the VSC, led briefly, then pitted on lap 48 and finished fourth. Antonelli said Norris deserved to win, and Norris remarked the team would "take it on the chin" and that there could be more wins this year.
