Phil Foden sent off in Manchester Derby, VAR upholds red

sportsSep 13, 202638323

Phil Foden was shown a straight red card after 23 minutes at Old Trafford for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes, and referee Michael Oliver sent the Manchester City midfielder down the tunnel. Replays appeared to show Fernandes kick Foden in the back first while Foden was on the floor, but Fernandes did not receive a booking. The incident was reviewed by the video assistant referee, who confirmed the on-field decision as violent conduct. Foden, 26, became only the second City player sent off in a Premier League Manchester derby, the first since Bernardo Corradi in December 2006. Pundits were divided: Wayne Rooney called it not a red, Danny Murphy and Paul Robinson said Foden deserved a red for kicking out, Gary Neville suggested Fernandes should at least have been booked, and Roy Keane said Fernandes was the more violent party. BBC Sport's Dale Johnson noted changes in guidance on violent conduct and said the VAR cannot intervene on an incident it deems a yellow for Fernandes rather than violent conduct.
