newsSep 11, 202620628

Jackson, Mississippi, police arrested 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff on Friday and charged him with murder in the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune after the state medical examiner officially classified her August 3 death as a homicide. Fortune was found in a hanging position outside an abandoned house with various states of decomposition, police said. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said investigators secured two search warrants and an arrest warrant, and after officers were unable to locate Ratliff at the search address they arrested him walking along a city street near police headquarters. Brackney said Ratliff had "an association" with Fortune but declined to provide further details and said the department cannot speculate beyond the medical examiner’s findings. Police interviewed nearly 15 people, collected forensic evidence, and Brackney said more arrest warrants could be served as the investigation remains active. "That arrest today is an important development in this investigation but it is not the conclusion," Brackney said, noting the case is ongoing.
