Rosh Hashanah begins as Jewish communities mark 5787

Rosh Hashanah begins tonight as Jewish communities worldwide mark the start of the Jewish New Year, 5787, with shofar calls, synagogue services and festive meals. Officials and public figures sent Shana Tovah wishes to congregants in New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, California, Virginia, Texas, London and Scotland. Several messages framed the holiday as a time for sweetness, health and peace, and one post cited President Obama saying the High Holidays are days of awe and renewal. The start of Rosh Hashanah coincides in some places with other observances and remembrances, including posts noting both September 11 and Eid al Adha on the same day. Personal reflections shared online ranged from preemptive forgiveness and private anniversaries to mourning for 9/11 victims and concern for Palestinian and Lebanese children affected by conflict. Communities will continue High Holiday observances through the upcoming days with prayer, communal meals and shofar ritual.

Shana tova u‘metuka! Wishing Jewish communities in New York and around the world a Happy, Sweet New Year. This Rosh Hashanah, at a time of rising antisemitism, it is especially important that we celebrate and uplift the incredible contributions and role of Jewish Americans in our communities.
