Bird of the Day, theme 'Iridescence'

natureSep 10, 202620212,609

Bird of the Day is a daily community theme and today’s prompt is Iridescence, with an alternate theme of Black-and-White. Contributors are posting nature photography that spotlights shifting, light-dependent colors and high-contrast plumage, from hummingbirds and starlings to common waterfowl. Notable entries include a Broad-billed Hummingbird photographed in Madera Canyon, a male Mallard showing its iridescent green head and blue speculum, and a White-Faced Ibis caught with sunlight revealing a spectrum of colors. The alt Black-and-White stream features a Black-and-white Warbler, snowy owl references, and coastal alcids like puffin, spectacled guillemot, and razorbill.

Now THAT is an uncommon bird!

What a stunning bird and shot!

Put your camera down... you're done. There is no better.

realitycheck01.bsky.social1

Strikingly lifelike. Black and White looks more alive than colour.

The Cat's Lawyer1

I've seen a few of these in Saskatchewan. Coming up here, taking bird seed from our sparrows.....

Lovely little warbler. Nice capture.

Was at the Santa Rita Lodge last month & saw 100's of hummers that day! Lots of Broadbills. Three other bird nerds confirmed we saw a female Berylline; a rare Mexican visitor. Also saw a Magnificent.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Iridescence. One of my faves. The common grackle. Just beautiful. #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky

Common grackle with iridescent colors of bronze, blue, purple and black feathers perched in a tree.

Great photo and those are beautiful birds. I used to get them in my yard when I lived in Tennessee

hatethisbs.bsky.social1

I find them to be absolutely stunning. Their strut always cracks me up. You’d think they were a model walking down a runway or part of the royal family.

alientech.bsky.social1

I think I've seen a couple hundred of these at a Walmart parking lot in Texas. They were just sitting there. Pretty interesting.

pennypebs.bsky.social1

You’re absolutely right is a beautiful bird 💞

Looks so fierce. Lovely color.

Although many of my favorite creatures will soon be gone as the weather turns cold, I am eager for the return of the snowy owl. For the #birdoftheday (alt) theme of #black&white #birds #owl #snowyowl #protectnature #EastCoastKin

Mallards are so common I sometimes don’t appreciate how fancy they are. So much glorious green #iridescence on this guy! #birds 🌿 #BirdOfTheDay

A head shot of a duck with a shiny green head and neck and a big yellow bill. He’s very handsome.

28629d ago

SoCal Leslie5

Agree. Drake Mallards are magnificent and never get the attention they deserve because they are common birds. That’s not really fair.

Steve Waycott Wildlife Photography 🍁5

I agree! They're simply stunning! If they weren't so common we'd be ooohing and ahhhing over them every time we see one.

gridflay2

They're the mourning dove of aquatic birds. Beautiful but overlooked!

Violet-backed starling, a striking bird with a wide range across sub-Saharan Africa. #BirdOfTheDay #Iridescence #eck 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a male violet-backed starling, or amethyst starling (Cinnyricinclus leucogaster), perched high on a thin brown branch. It's a relatively small starling with gleaming iridescent violet and purple feathers covering its head, back, and wings, contrasting with bright white underparts and a yellow eye. It faces toward the left of frame with a pale blue background behind it.

What an absolute stunner, Heather!* * and yes the old Healther typo had to be corrected before posting. 😁

We saw those guys in South Africa, and I absolutely love them. You got a much better shot than I did, though.

I love that shade of purple.

From @robcrank68.bsky.social: Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Iridescence, any bird whose colour changes with light on them. Here's a White-Faced Ibis with the sun hitting it just right to see the array of colours. #birds

A bird with a long beak flying in the sky. It's body is reddish-brown and its feathers are a rainbow of colour as they get lit up by the sun.

Tom3

Tim, this is a fantastic shot of one of my favorite birds. When someone says iridescenc, I immediately thin of the white-faced ibis.

Lori1

Beautiful capture! 😍 These birds are so colorful, but tough to capture the color. Stunning!

Rain Hayes1

Stunner! I had no idea ibises contained this beautiful muted rainbow.

Rob’s main #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #Iridescence, any bird whose colour changes with light on them. This shot doesn’t really show it but going with one of the usual candidates - the common #kingfisher #birds #photography #ECK #ukbirds #wildlife #ukwildlife

A kingfisher on a perch protruding from the water sideways on and quietly looking up to the left above still blue water.

Sorry I'm very late to the party today but Rob has said that #BirdOfTheDay is #Iridescence with an alt' theme of #Black&White. I've gone with the alt' theme but showing my husband's photos of a #Puffin, a Spectacled or Bridled #Guillemot & a #Razorbill all from Bempton Cliffs. 😍 #birds
