Study finds no physical advantage for trans women in sport

A Brazilian research team published a meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine examining 52 studies and data from 2,943 trans women and 2,309 trans men alongside 568 cis women and 665 cis men. After a year or more of hormone therapy, trans women’s overall physical performance tended to match cis women for upper and lower body strength and maximal oxygen consumption, although trans women showed higher absolute lean mass. The authors said these results contradict claims that testosterone-driven puberty gives irreversible competitive advantages and concluded the evidence does not support blanket bans on transgender women in sport. Study co-author Bruno Gualano told El País that the findings refute the logic behind such bans but that substantial gaps remain, including limited follow-up duration in many studies and scarce data on elite-level trans athletes. The report also found trans men exhibit intermediate strength and body composition metrics between cis men and cis women after several years of hormone therapy. The paper comes as the IOC, led by President Kirsty Coventry, is reportedly considering banning trans women and reviving sex testing, and after the U.S. federal government issued an executive order to withhold funds from schools that allow trans women and girls to compete.
