U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis in Miami denied bail for Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate on Sept. 9, ordering the brothers to remain jailed in the United States while they fight extradition to the United Kingdom on new felony charges including sex trafficking and rape. Romanian prosecutors on Sept. 4 indicted 39-year-old Andrew Tate on counts that include trafficking minors, money laundering, sex with a minor and witness tampering, and indicted 38-year-old Tristan Tate for alleged complicity. U.S. Marshals arrested the dual U.S.-British citizens in Miami on July 18 after British prosecutors requested extradition; the new British charges relate to alleged offenses involving four victims between July 2010 and August 2017. The judge wrote in a 30-page order that the brothers' wealth and frequent international travel make them quintessential flight risks and found they failed to meet their burden to show special circumstances warranting release. Federal prosecutors said the siblings posed a danger to the community if released, citing allegations of violent sex crimes; the brothers' lawyers argued their high public visibility and prior Romanian court appearances weigh against detention. Britain has until Sept. 16 to submit its full extradition request to the State Department, and the legal process to decide extradition may take several months, meaning the Tates will likely remain jailed during an extended review.
