Bird of the Day, theme 'ABCD'

natureSep 9, 202623012,949

Bird of the Day is a daily community event with today’s theme #ABCD, asking for birds whose names begin with A, B, C, or D, with an alternate theme #RSTU. Participants are posting wildlife photos and field shots that emphasize species and moments, from backyard perches to birds in flight and feeding flocks. Standout entries include a California scrub-jay, a Brown-headed Cowbird perched on a deer, and a Northern cardinal glaring at the photographer, plus posts of a Bullfinch in sunshine and a small group of European Bee-eaters stopping to feed. Look for hummingbirds like a Black-chinned and a Ruby-throated, waterbirds such as an American Coot and an Anhinga, and action shots like a Sandhill Crane mid hop under the hashtag #ABCD.

Love these birds so much, they are incredibly smart and observant, but man, they make a racket like no other when riled up!

More personality than any wild birds I've been around! This one hung out with me for years.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #ABCD, any bird name beginning with any of these letters. I give you a cardinal (northern cardinal). He is clearly not happy with me.😂

Of course this turkey sized crow turned his back just as I snapped the pic in traffic. In my 64 years I've never seen one this massive.

#BirdoftheDay... birds starting with #ABCD. Here is my American kestrel from yesterday posing on an electrical tower. Happy HumpDay! #birds #Nature #Photography

Seemingly wedged in the angle of two metal beams sits a male falcon. He is cream colored with black spots He has slate gray wings tucked at his side and a brown back. He sports a gray cap, white cheeks with two vertical black stripes and a short, hooked gray beak. He is viewed from below as he is high up in the massive tower.

Hi folks. Going to do some #BirdOfTheDay reposts. Sorry I can’t comment on all. 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Here’s some flying Redshanks. Taken yesterday. #RSTU #birds #photography #ECK

Three Common Redshanks in flight, captured against a backdrop of tall green reeds and grasses. The upper bird is prominent with its wings fully extended, showing finely patterned brown plumage, a long dark bill and flashes of bright orange at the tail. Two more Redshanks fly just behind and below it, their wings outstretched as they move through the vegetation.

🪶 Alan has chosen #ABCD as today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme; any bird beginning with these letters. Alt. is #RSTU; any bird beginning with these letters. Any excuse to post my Bullfinch in the sunshine. #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #RedWed #ColorAday

A male Bullfinch perched at the end of a small, dead branch in the bright sunshine. The bird is left of centre of the shot, looking right so that its right side is visible.
It is a stocky finch with a thick, black bill. It has a glossy black cap and bright red cheeks and breast. Its back is grey and the wings are black with a white bar across them. It has white underparts and a black tail.
The bird and the small branch are the only things in the shot, against a clear, blue sky.
