Ectopic pregnancy deaths nearly doubled, worse in states with abortion bans

scienceSep 9, 20266011,474

ProPublica’s analysis of CDC data found that nearly 200 women died from ectopic pregnancies from 2020 to 2025, almost double the roughly 100 deaths recorded in the previous six years. Ectopic pregnancies, which typically implant outside the uterus most often in a fallopian tube and usually occur in the first trimester, can cause organ rupture and catastrophic bleeding but are treatable with prompt termination of the pregnancy. Maternal health experts told ProPublica that such deaths should be preventable, and many were surprised by the spike. The increase occurred nationwide but rose much more steeply in states that enacted abortion bans after the Supreme Court decision in 2022. ProPublica documented lawsuits from patients in Texas and Oklahoma, including Kyleigh Thurman and Leitaea Lowrimore, who said hospitals denied or delayed care; regulators found Ascension Seton Williamson failed to properly screen Thurman and did not call in an OB-GYN, violating the hospital’s policies and federal emergency care law. Reporters and experts say COVID-era hospital strain likely contributed to some deaths, but the persistent rise and documented delays in care tied to abortion restrictions make those laws a key focus for investigating the trend. The findings have prompted malpractice suits and calls for investigations into how state abortion bans and hospital practices are affecting timely treatment for ectopic pregnancies.

NEW: Our analysis found that from 2020 to 2025, the rate of deaths involving ectopic pregnancies nearly doubled compared with the previous six-year period. The uptick was steeper in states with abortion bans.

Horrific though unsurprising report from @propublica.org: Ectopic pregnancy deaths have basically doubled since the end of Roe

New reporting from my colleagues: Ectopic-related deaths in abortion banned states are increasing. One expert said deaths from ectopic pregnancies should “really be a never event.” www.propublica.org/article/ecto...

If only countless people had warned of exactly this. 🧵 "ProPublica’s analysis found a stark and baffling increase: Almost 200 women with the condition died from 2020 to 2025, compared with about 100 in the previous six years." www.rawstory.com/ectopic-preg...

The next phase in the abortion wars may come down to one question: Will federal courts allow the rights of red states to enforce bans to override the rights of blue states to protect access? The 5th Circuit hears a pivotal case today that could provide an answer. www.politico.com/news/2026/09...
