Justin Webb admits he should have phrased antisemitism question to Ed Miliband better

journalismSep 9, 2026773,457

Justin Webb said he "should have phrased better" a question on Radio Four's Today programme that suggested antisemitism might be "not as important as some other forms of racism" during a recorded interview with American pollster John Zogby about the Ilhan Omar row. Webb asked whether a party could tell supporters that antisemitism was "a different order of racism" and "not as important" while still being bad. Comedian David Baddiel tweeted he felt a "terrible chill" at the line of questioning and actress Tracy-Ann Oberman said she "couldn't quite believe" what she heard. A BBC spokeswoman said Webb was trying to highlight a growing trend among US Democrats of suggesting antisemitism is not comparable with other racisms and that he was not expressing a personal view. The BBC told The Jewish Chronicle Webb privately spoke with Baddiel, whom a BBC source said accepted Webb meant no harm, and the source added Webb accepted the question should have been better phrased because listeners might not share his and Zogby's familiarity with American politics. The article notes the Ilhan Omar row has prompted President Donald Trump to reportedly say the Democrats "hate Jewish people."

What the absolute fuck is this line of questioning by Justin Webb? It’s worse than pure grandstanding; it’s querying Miliband’s faith.

This is insane and also I think we should start doing this very specifically to politicians who profess Christianity and use it to justify their policies

JL Kaufmann26

Because a posh white Christian goy is EXACTLY who gets to tell a Jew if he's a proper Jew or not. For fuck's sake, Britain, what are we even doing here?

Keiron Pim9

Webb is right that Jews who attend shul are at greater risk than secular ones but his logic is flawed in assuming that these entirely correct sanctions raise the threat level. And it’s odious to imply that secular Jews endanger our religious counterparts by holding Israeli extremists to account.

"I note, minister, that you sport a neat short back and sides, rather than Hasidic payots. Why should anyone listen to you - a proven bacon sandwich chomper - who probably thought Iran were treated shabbily at the World Cup? Can you, for example, quote me ten word-perfect Lenny Bruce routines..."

Rick8

That thing they teach you when you first start interviewing people for jobs. Would you ask this question of a non-Jewish Foreign Secretary?

Adrian Short8

This is extremely clumsily done. Webb's point is that observant Jews have skin in the game in terms of being at risk of attacks which non-observant Jews don't. But he conflates observant Jewishness with support for Israel, while also ignoring that Miliband explicitly supports Israel.

Philip O'Connor8

The BBC is now the Breitbart Broadcasting Corporation. A once-proud public broadcaster has been politicised into becoming a far-right propaganda machine, exactly as the Tories and their donors wanted.

Allie Morgan7

On a complete side note it's kind of funny that Miliband is still best known for awkwardly eating a bacon sandwich and yet these idiots assume he's devout as fuck because they can't conceive of the concept of ethnicity.

Justin Webb is doing the ‘you’re not a *proper* Jew, are you?’ thing to Ed Miliband on the Today programme right now.

If you’re not Jewish you won’t understand how simultaneously hurtful and enraging this is I can only imagine how hard it must be for Ed Miliband, the son of literal Holocaust survivors - whatever you think of him, he does not deserve this

Patrick Andelic485

I went back to listen to it and it’s genuinely quite shocking.

The transphobia to antisemitism pipeline at the BBC One of the BBC's most committed anti-trans activist presenters, live on air accusing a Jewish man of not being Jewish enough for his liking

Elaine Crory38

Not for the first time and not for the last I imagine. Same thing with Polanski. Turns out these folk think there is one right way to be Jewish and that's to switch off your brain and mouth and do whatever conservative Christians tell you to do

Grace Robertson 🏳️‍⚧️34

"the bbc doesn't have a conservative bias, it just has an incumbent party bias"

Naadir13

It continues to be good that takfirism amongst Muslims is an indicator that you need a Prevent counterterrorism referral, but takfirism against Jews who don't 110% support Israel is just centrist common sense.

Cethan Leahy11

Probably not great that the media feel emboldened to just say it now when in the past, it was all wink wink nudge nudge photos of bacon sandwiches.

What’s lovely about Judaism is you’re ‘allowed’ to do the bits you want and not the others. The theory is, there’s no such thing as a perfect Jew, we can always be better. So there’s no such thing as a ‘proper’ Jew.

Paul McMc7

Lol, who remembers when the media told us antisemitism was bad?
