University Challenge, Leicester team references Heaven 17

tvSep 7, 202617156

On tonight's University Challenge, the University of Leicester team faced a music question about the 1980s band Heaven 17; several viewers noted both teams failed to identify the group during the round. Leicester's team includes Sam Carlier, who is studying for an MPhil in Astrophysics, and Patrick Laughrey, who is studying for an MPhys in Physics. Viewer posts called out a difficult music round and questioned the show's tendency to expect knowledge of 1980s songs from contestants, with one commenter writing that watching both teams sit blankly on Heaven 17 made them "feel about a thousand years old." The exchange drew attention to the episode's music questions and to Leicester's participation in the series.

People studying for City & Guilds qualifications could be serious challengers to the Russel Group universities on University Challenge. The BBC would do it but they're scared of plumbers beating Oxbridge students on TV.

Tell me you’ve never watched University Challenge… etc

I'm not sure specialists tend to beat generalists at quizzes. Arts students usually do well because they have a broad knowledge base. Engineers less so.

The only reason institutions like Oxford and Cambridge do so well at University Challenge is that they can enter multiple teams ,each college is treated as a separate university, giving loads more chances unlike pleb universities, who only get one team each

I hope all the #TOTP gang were screaming at their TVs as loudly as I was #UniversityChallenge #QuizzyMonday

Convinced they only ask people in their early 20s to name songs from the 1980s to upset people watching in their 50s. #universitychallenge

It's my favourite "shout at the television" part

Sample questions elsewhere: Q. Name a British Artist A. Idi Emin? Yes! Q. Name a Mexican artist A. Freddy Karloff? Near enough

University Challenge still isn’t on replay which makes me assume it’s either a copyright strike or Amol Rajan died during the second picture round.

Two of our students are on the University of Leicester team on University Challenge this evening. Sam Carlier is studying for an MPhil in Astrophysics and Patrick Laughrey for an MPhys in Physics. We'll be cheering them and their teammates along! le.ac.uk/news/2026/au...

“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!” 🦁🐯🐻 This famous line comes from which 1939 Judy Garland film? 🎬 I always enjoy looking at #UniversityChallenge mascots, especially on where they are two different species within the same genus (Panthera) 🐯 Leicester have a tiger 🦁 Birmingham have a lion

Rust showing as I was slow off the mark after two weeks off but I scraped a reasonable 18/120 in the end. Was woeful on a music round I really should have done better on. #UniversityChallenge
