Canada marks Labour Day as unions renew push for worker rights

On Labour Day in Canada unions celebrated past victories and renewed campaigns for safer workplaces and fair wages, Federation of Labour President Jessica McCormick said, urging continued vigilance because many historic fights for workplace safety remain unresolved. McCormick told reporters that the labour movement must keep fighting for those protections that prompted recognition of the holiday. A number of Labour Day activities and rallies are planned throughout the province to press those demands. Meanwhile municipalities observed the holiday with most businesses closed in Halifax and Town of Osoyoos facilities and services closed for Labour Day, reducing routine public services during the observances.
