Noir Alley spotlights The Yellow Canary, starring Pat Boone

Tonight TCM's Noir Alley screened The Yellow Canary, the 1963 crime film scripted by Rod Serling and starring Pat Boone and Barbara Eden. Eddie Muller introduced and closed the show, and viewers noted a 93-minute runtime and the film's cool 1960s jazz score and camerawork by Crosby. Several commenters said Boone financed completion of the picture so the production could pay cast and crew, and others described the script as a lesser Serling effort after Twilight Zone burnout but still entertaining. Reactions were mixed: some praised Steve Forrest and the supporting cast, others called Boone an odd choice for noir while acknowledging effective moments and setpieces. Noir City New York screened The Yellow Canary earlier this year and Muller's introduction referenced an interview from that screening. Muller's sign-off promised a more conventional noir for next week's Noir Alley.
