Australian wildcard Dane Sweeny upset 14th seed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the US Open last 32. Sweeny, ranked more than 100 places below Musetti, produced the biggest win of his career and will face world number 22 Luciano Daredri on Saturday AEST. Musetti, a dual grand slam semi-finalist, required a medical time-out early in the third set as Sweeny ran him ragged. Sweeny, standing 170 cm, dived for acrobatic volleys and wore a large ice pack on his right elbow after his first-round win. The victory guarantees Sweeny at least US$290,000 and lifts him to a career-best around world number 115. Fellow Australians Tristan Schoolkate and Alexei Popyrin both lost second-round matches, falling in four sets to Flavio Cobolli and Alejandro Tabilo respectively, ending hopes of more countrymen joining Sweeny in round three. "I'm just grateful to be even able to compete in grand slams," Sweeny said after the win.
