Bird of the Day, theme 'Contrast'

natureSep 3, 202625413,472

Bird of the Day is a daily community theme with today tagged #Contrast, defined as light birds against dark backgrounds or vice versa, with an alternate theme of Thrushes. The gallery shows high-contrast compositions and thrush portraits, from moody backlit and classic mono shots to bright birds isolated against dark marshes. Standout posts include a Varied Thrush entered under the thrush alternative, a single photo pairing a dark cormorant with a snowy egret for both contrast types in one frame, and a Yellow-headed Blackbird declaring territory against dead cattails at spring light. Also look for a great white egret holding court in dark shallows and a steller's jay perched on a snowy stump as vivid contrast studies.

A striking black-and-white image of a Little Egret emerging from deep shadow, its head, neck and body illuminated against a completely dark background. Its long, slender bill points into the distance while a subtle reflection appears in the water below. The dramatic lighting gives the impression of the egret stepping out of the darkness and into the light.

A close-up of a white mute swan gliding from right to left across a dark stretch of water. The warm sunlight illuminates its white plumage and orange-red beak from the side. A reflection of the bird can be seen on the dark, rippled water.

Here is a beautiful stork sitting on its huge nest. The nestpool is man made. In nature parc Lelystad, they have had a breeding program for storks. Because they where almost completely declined here. Many from those storks have stay in the parc. But the others fly to South Africa for winter. And early spring they come back. This stork returns every year back to build it nest higher and higher. The couple have raised 3 chick's this year.

A photo of a male red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) perched on a slender brown reed, facing the camera head-on and looking directly into it with dark eyes. It's a medium-sized songbird with glossy black plumage and just-visible red and yellow shoulder patches (epaulets) along the bend of each wing. The background is blurred, bright green grass in warm-hued late afternoon lighting.

macro photo of a Fish Crow perched on a bundle of thick, weathered suspended lines against a clear, solid blue sky background. The large, entirely black corvid is captured mid-scratch, balancing on one leg while lifting its other scaly black foot to scratch its throat, exposing a hint of reddish-pink gular skin beneath its sleek, glossy plumage. The side-lit sunlight accentuates the intense contrast between the deep, dark silhouettes of the bird and wires against the bright, saturated blue background.

A Stellar's jay standing on a wooden beam in the snow. One foot is in a chunk of ice. He has a black head, crest, and neck with amazing white eyebrows and white lines on his forehead. His belly is a paler bright blue while his tail is a darker bright blue. His beak and legs are black. He looks like he's disappointed in his life choices.

A horizontal photo of an American Avocet flying above still water at sunset. The water is calm with only small ripples. The water is orange, reflecting the color of a vivid orange sunset. The Avocet is in the center of the frame, wings extended down, legs trailing behind the bird. It's long bill angles down before curving upward at the end. The bird is silhouetted against the water and nearly black except for orange light illuminating the ends of the wing feathers.

A silhouette of a European Robin perched on a branch on a cold, dull winters day. It is a close up shot and the Robin is in a side profile looking to the right of the picture. Even though the picture was taken in colour it has the impression of a black and white photo. The background is blurred grey with some blurred branches to the left.

A great white egret with bright breeding plumage -featuring a yellow-orange bill and a striking green-yellow orbital patch - standing still in shallow, dark water that perfectly mirrors its white form. Framed by a moss-dappled boulder on the left and rugged, shadowy tree trunks in the background, the lone bird faces left in sharp focus against the soft, earthy tones of the natural habitat.
