New Heritage Minute video starring Rick Mercer
New Heritage Minute just dropped, starring Rick Mercer as the mayor of Gander, Newfoundland:
"Welcome to the rock if you come from away..."
Rick Mercer has been drafted in to support the Canadian national identity!
This should be played on a Loop in every American TV set.
I WAS NOT EMOTIONALLY READY FOR THIS SO EARLY IN THE MORNING
This is timely and wonderful 💖 🇨🇦 I have missed Rick.
During Operation Yellow Ribbon, Canada rescued > 200 packed US commercial airliners in need of emergency haven on Sep 11. With its military airstrip, Gander (pop 12k) took in a disproportionate # of planes. Residents even hosted stranded passengers in their homes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operati...
Petrina Bromley, the Newfoundlander who originated Bonnie in Come From Away, plays an American in this one.
*laughs in trade war timing* anyways, go cry a little.
Pass this on to Americans making fun of Canada and saying we only take and never give back.
If you didn't know, this is my corner of Canada, about a 3.5 - 4 hour drive away from my city(depends on traffic, construction, pee/snack breaks). Very important that this drops now, before the 25th anniversary, while the Orange one forgets what it's like to care for others.
This is who Canada is, and this is who we Americans are turning our backs on. So we can support a rapist who stole money from kids with cancer. No matter who is elected in 2028, I know that a lot of Canadians are going to remember who was elected in 2024.
Canada is full of nice people, but the people of Gander have always had my vote for being the nicest.
Rick Mercer has been in so many PARODY Heritage Minutes that I’m unsure casting him in a legitimate one makes sense.
STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING NEW HERITAGE MINUTE JUST DROPPED!!!!!!!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCjs...
Aaaa Rick Mercer, so good to see him again!
My brain has once again changed a vowel and made an entirely different video. Gender and 9/11 sounds like a WILD time but I'm sure someone could do it. GONDOR and 9/11 uh... no. (I read the book that the play was based on a few years ago. same with No Other Plane in the Sky.)
Dang it, now I'm crying...
Without Canada, the USA is nothing. Trump keeps forgetting that.
If you haven’t seen Come from Away… please try and check it out! There’s regional productions happening and a pro-shot on AppleTV. The story of Gander on 9/11 is powerful and beautiful and the musical is spectacular. It’ll remind you that sometimes goodness does prevail.
Without Canada #cdnpoli, the USA is nothing. Just remember that #USpoli.
NGL, I was in tears in less than a minute. Maybe because this relationship is so f**ked now
Since about 1990, Canadians had had “Heritage Minutes” about our history that play during TV programming instead of ads. Today we get one for Gander on 9/11. It’s particularly fitting as the US government has selective memory about anything Canada has ever done to help Americans.
It being Rick Mercer is brilliantly fitting during these times because no one has done more in the last 30 years to keep Canadians aware of how much we differ from Americans.
I felt waves and waves of grief as I watched that video. Imagine people in the White House not only taking this relationship for granted but actively trying to destroy it. (I’m thinking of that YouGov polling data I shared repeatedly last night.)
Amazing timing for specifically this brand new Canadian Heritage Minute. youtu.be/wCjsUk7PchI
I have zero doubt that even now, with the vile rhetoric America's chosen leaders have chosen to use against their northern neighbors that Canadians would not hesitate to repeat this act if it happened again.
I still can't believe how my government is treating Canada, our greatest ally. It makes me sick.
The play based on this, Come From Away, was astonishingly good
Not gonna lie, I saw Rick Mercer's face on the thumbnail and 100% expected it to be a bit.
i saw this in my recommended this morning and i was like...that's very good timing
oh, they're still making those? neat.
Oh shit it's a real Heritage Minute, not a parody one (despite Rick Mercer being in it)
I wonder if there was a committee meeting debating whether casting Rick Mercer would make people think it's a parody, and whether or not that's actually a problem
I recognize at least one original Come From Away castmember, too.
Thanks for the heads up, I saw the thumbnail and 100% thought parody 😂
Give it a watch. There's some serious potential in reviving Heritage Minutes in an age dominated by short-form video.
I liked it but the thumbnail makes it look like it's a RMR/22 Minutes parody
There's some Albertan short-form video content creator who did a deep dive "takedown" of the corporation and originator of the concept for being MAGA aligned (maybe so) but the new ones are so multicultural, and highlighting women and LGBTQ people that I don't really but it
They had a great one last year about Bora Laskin, the first Jewish Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.
