HBO releases extended Harry Potter TV series trailer
As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.
you could pirate it, or you could instead spend your time watching something that isn't the reheated leftovers of something that wasnt very good the first time
*sigh* time to tap the sign again...
This person actually compared Harry Potter to a cure for an incurable disease. This is what passes as intellectual debate. All they have are made up long walk attempted gotchas because to them trans people are not real human beings struggling to survive. Our rights aren't a thought exercise!
It really isn’t that hard to give up Harry Potter, yall. And there’s so much better fantasy school stuff you can read. Earthsea, Discworld, witch hat atelier, little witch academia… none of which are funding a vile human being.
"I'll just pirate it" no. Harry Potter needs to be blasted from the cultural zeitgeist entirely. If you care even an iota about trans people you will watch Literally Anything Else
It needs to flop. Badly.
while true this line of argument unfortunately has zero effective power to shift people unless they were already going to not watch HP in the first place because "comforting nostalgic consumption" generally always supersedes ethics but especially when it comes to an already maligned minority
As someone who has been tweeted about personally by Rowling. And who spends my whole life trying to fight the damage caused by the litigation she funds. I think, personally, I would be less harmed by you giving me an actual kick in the ribs than watching the new Harry Potter & trying to justify it.
This. There are so, so many authors (and series) to support who aren't Rowling. Start with @rickriordan.bsky.social, if you want the easiest comp. Or consider picking up @dhonielle.bsky.social's magical series. Share your best recs below?
Harry Potter and The My Balls Stone Harry Potter and the Order of My Balls Harry Potter and My Half Blood Balls Hogwart's Legacy of My Fuckin Balls My Fantastic Balls and Where to Find Them
I’m sharing this because it surprises me how many people still don’t know the active harm this author is funding. Conversations about whether we can separate the art from the artist might be interesting, but not when every penny will help fund horrid anti-trans activities around the world.
JKR's rampant bigotry and single-minded crusade against human rights really *ought* to be enough to dissuade people from watching, but, like, it also seems like it will be bad for other, unrelated reasons. Well maybe sort of related.
If you post a "I hate watched this so you don't have to" to grievance farm, you are still a part of the problem
I agree with the headline. With the possible exception of this kind of critical commentary, I will not be watching, boosting, or otherwise engaging with the new Harry Potter.
The important thing to note is that, even if you pirate it, you are opting to support it. You'll talk about it. You'll engage in it. It will encourage piracy sites to carry it, which will spread it to others who will too. Engagement in HP has no 'clean' choice.
Please do notice that only one of the authors listed is alive. Which tells me that the question is nothing but rationalization to allow oneself to support an author who's funding genocide. Because the line is: if you know an artist literally FUNDS human misery, DON'T SUPPORT THEIR WORK IN ANY WAY.
Consuming Harry Potter content doesn't mean that someone is transphobic, but it does reveal that they don't care about the health and safety of trans people as much as they value a piece of fiction funding the modern genocide of trans people.
Consuming Harry Potter content doesn't mean that you're transphobic, but it does mean that I'm going to think less of you and feel a whole lot less safe and comfortable with you because while you might not hate me, you certainly don't have my back either.
I normally dont make this kind of equivalence bc people misunderstand it, but this is like how Black ppl dont trust a lot of white ppl. Majority ingroup maked decisions that are "good enough/sound reasonable" to them; patting themselves on the back while ignoring the pleas of the affected outgroup.
Nah, consuming Harry Potter content makes you transphobic by proxy. If you want to funnel money into the pockets of those who want to kill us, you get the title that goes with it.
Some people seem to be missing the point, and I just... *sigh* I hate discourse (and Harry Potter) so much
We have a word for that: transphobic
if you're a patron of a nazi bar, you're a nazi. it's really that simple.
as always our enemy is the lust for Treats and if we are to survive the Treat Pipeline™️ must be destroyed.
even setting aside the rowling of it all: it's weird to reboot harry potter simply based on the chronology of it all, yeah?
like, deathly hallows 2 came out 2011. it's weird. it's like if disney just decided to do a straight remake of A New Hope.
Yeah, bigtime. Like it's still a specific story, it's not like rebooting Spiderman or whatever. It'd be like casting a new Luke Skywalker in the 1990s and redoing Episode IV.
I think they're banking on adult Harry Potter fans being excited by a more faithful adaptation of the series & on young fans watching anything HP-related. Whether this pays off is quite another matter, but I don't think it's patently insane
I sort of get remaking classics after a couple of generations have past. Especially if the original was obscure and you have something new to say. But a frame-by-frame copy of some recent big budget film series? There is no point other than greed. What other films didn't get made because of this?
I keep saying to this - Dumbledore. The franchise took like 8 movies to figure out how to write the character correctly, you really only see it in the second Beasts movie. I could see the appeal of an adaptation that had course corrections like that. Shame Rowling got kissed by a Dementor, though.
Even with all the culture war junk, the first two movies are slogs to get through. The movies only survived because the third one is an all time great kids movie. I don't see the series making it to season three because who needs 10 hours to tell stories were 2 hours were more then enough.
Look, of course a bunch of your favorite British actors are in the new Harry Potter series. You just can be a mainstream celeb in the UK who is perceived as fundamentally progressive while being a massive transphobe. This isn’t a contradiction in elite British society right now.
Transphobia is absolutely on the rise in America. But the median Democratic politician or Dem-supporting celeb (which is most) is wildly more pro-trans than their Labour and other British counterparts.
I think that’s the wrong answer for most of them. It’s more about sidelining that issue in order to get a steady income
The UK was seen as a Progressive beacon for years especially in fandom circles. I’m disturbed at how far it has fallen so quickly.
Normally I do not hope a show is bad, but I legitimately hope that new Harry Potter show is fuck awful and so even the people who don't care about trans people enough to watch it fall off, and the whole thing loses everyone a shit load of money and tarnishes the entire brand.
I know this implies that people who still defend Harry Potter develop some form of taste but I can dream, can't I?
My main hope is that people aren't interested because they actually like/have nostalgia for the movies more than the books
I’d like people not to watch it because of the entirely seperate concern of it being a direct money pipeline to the forces of evil, but not holding out much hope, so would take the other thing.
One would imagine that warmed up leftovers of your nostalgic fav would be a big turn off for just about anyone but the current media landscape argues against that.
The worst part is even if that happens, JKR still gets a payday. Which wouldn't even be a thing if they just shut the fuck up and used their wealth to do anything else but actively damage other people worse off than them. Like, is there not a worthwhile charity they can get behind? No?
I don’t understand how any new show finds its audience on HBO Max. Have watched all of Rick and Morty, two seasons of Mad Men, two seasons of Six Feet Under, and Superman (2025). Suggested next watch: the new Harry Potter trailer.
I am, of course, fascinated as to how this…unusual…treatment of the material performs, and I fully intend to watch the after the fact documentary about it. But no, I am not gonna watch a *new* children’s show, come on!
To be fair that could be hyper-accurate prediction of specifically you.
After the first trailer it came up after House of the Dragon which made me smile. Harry Potter just like our show with a lot of incest
It really wouldn't surprise me if the mundane answer is that production studios are just paying to be pushed to the top of lists, overriding any sort of genre matching algorithm.
One day, networks will remember they are not tech companies (unlike Netflix) and that in order to get the proper shows in front of eyeballs, an algorithm will never work for them. Sadly, HBO will no longer exist by the time that happens.
Not quite your point, but as someone who watched Ponies, an HBO show that did not find an audience, its decision to end on a cliffhanger that is now very definitive does basically turn it into a shaggy dog story of Emilia Clarke being imminently murdered by the KGB.
straight up blocking anyone sharing the harry potter trailer idgaf.
I unfollowed someone who posted their wordle score today after being informed of the nyt's complicity.
I went on reddit and saw it posted. The comments were all "I can't wait to see this" and I wanted to scream
Instead of posting the recycled slop of new potter, here's the swap: Nimona. Shapeshifting kid the whole kingdom calls an abomination for changing her own body. From a comic by a trans man. Same genre, none of your money to nazirowling. 😅 www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_fu...
*tacks Sloane's sign on the wall*
Really cynical move of HBO to release the harry potter show on christmas day that's some drug dealing CIA agent shit. Everyone better confront their mom and be like "hey don't watch that shit don't give money to the evil woman who wants to legislate Trans People out of existence"
has anyone else considered having a woke mom. it's pretty easy
the production costs seem like they ballooned crazy high (guessing bc they wanna make a BTS doc to keep the zombie IP abit longer) to such a degree that it seems like it will be a guaranteed profit loss. not that these ghouls care, they all have more money than god already
There aren't many reasons to be thankful for your parents being extremely Evangelical but I am glad it kept Harry Potter out of our home for promoting satanism (it had magic in it)
sometimes it can be a blessing having parents who only watch reruns of 60s sitcoms.
