Apple Maps renames Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' for U.S. users

Apple renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America on its Apple Maps service for US-based users after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename the lake amid a trade spat with Canada. The change follows Trump's order and a similar switch by Google, and Apple updated US views while Canadian users continue to see Lake Ontario. The executive order came after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods and gives the US Department of the Interior 30 days to update the Geographic Names Information Service. US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Trump specifically urged Apple to make the rename on its Maps platform. At the lake, Ontario installed a sign reading Lake Ontario. Now and Always and Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the sign reminds people it is Lake Ontario now and forever. Apple previously changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for US users following a 2025 renaming by the Trump administration; Google made the same Gulf change and was later sued by Mexico over its earlier rename decision.
