Bird of the Day, theme 'Its All White'

natureSep 2, 202624313,377

Bird of the Day is running the theme ItsAllWhite, a prompt to post birds whose main color is white, with an alternate theme of RedHeads. The gallery today features white-plumaged subjects and natural-light scenes, from close-up action shots to quiet refuge portraits and coastal sightings. Look for a frozen mid-flight hummingbird with iridescent blue tail against creamy bokeh, a great egret hunting at sunrise, and multiple snowy egrets including one noted in breeding plumage; other entries include a sulphur-crested cockatoo, swans, a gannet called Gayle, spoonbills, and an albino blackbird. Hashtag to follow is #ItsAllWhite and the alt tag is #RedHeads.

Horizontal orientation high-speed wildlife photograph titled "Swallow-tailed Hummingbird in Flight". The image features a vibrant blue and green hummingbird suspended in mid-air with its wings spread vertically and its fan-shaped blue tail fully expanded. Crisp sharpness details the metallic sheen of the plumage and individual tail feathers. The background consists of a smooth, out-of-focus soft green bokeh that isolates the bird in motion. Optimized for hummingbird in flight, high speed bird photography, iridescent plumage, swallow-tailed hummingbird, wildlife macro action, and bird bokeh background indexing

A close-up portrait of a European Goldfinch perched on a leafy branch, showing its distinctive red face, black-and-white head, warm buff-brown body and striking yellow wing bars. The bird looks alertly to the right against a dark, softly blurred background.

A dramatically side-and back-lit Snowy Egret in breeding plumage is perched atop a rough gray snag facing forward and looking slightly downward, showing off an impressive crown of delicate white feathers over their head, and looking fierce with yellow eyes, red lores, and black beak. The background is completely black. Easy to see why they were hunted for their feathers until they were protected in the early twentieth century.

A white mute swan is swimming on dark water. The bird is seen in profile, surrounded by green leaves in the foreground, which partially frame the subject. The light falls gently on the white plumage and highlights the orange-red beak with its black knob. The background lies in deep shadow

A big white bird sits on a backyard clothesline. The bird is all white, with a black beak, black eyes, a yellow crest, and pale yellow underparts on his tail feathers. He is facing left. (The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is a large white cockatoo. It has a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of the wings. Sexes are similar, although the female can be separated at close range by its red-brown eye (darker brown in the male). This is a noisy and conspicuous cockatoo, both at rest and in flight. Young Sulphur-crested Cockatoos resemble the adults.)

A Cattle Egret perched on the top of a large rock. The bird is centre of frame, looking left so that its left side is showing. Its neck is tucked into its body, giving it a short, company shape. It has a short, yellow bill and white plumage all over, there are hints of orange around its crown and neck. Its legs are long and black. The sunshine is coming in from the right and behind the bird, giving a slightly backlit appearance. The top of the rock the bird is on is in the foreground, peaking out and the background is out of focus green grass

A snowy egret is a rare find in Michigan USA. This was one of four is a pond at the Erie Marsh Preserve last week. A small white heron, it has a black bill and legs. With yellow on its bill, this one is likely a juvenile.

A close-up shot of a Red-headed Woodpecker perched profile-view on a weathered, bare tree branch that extends diagonally from the lower right. The bird features a vibrant, fully solid crimson-red head, neck, and throat, contrasting sharply with a clean, stark white underbelly and bold black and white wings. The background is a solid, cloudless vivid blue sky, creating a clean look that highlights the striking colors of the bird.

Reddish Egrets normally have a dusty rose head and neck and a blue-gray body, but this white morph is all white (well, the feathers anyway). The bird has a light blue mask and a long two-tone daggerlike bill (pink at the base and black at the tip). It can't be seen in the lighting of the photo, but the legs are electric blue (part of its breeding colors). The egret is standing on a dead branch in shallow brown muddy water.

@neilcam57.bsky.social106
A detailed, sharp profile photograph capturing the head and neck of a Royal Spoonbill in crisp lateral profile, facing left against a dark, softly blurred background. The white plumage of its crest and neck is clearly textured, leading to its dark, bare facial skin which accentuates a striking red eye with a yellow-orange orbital ring (that looks like a yellow eyebrow) . Its characteristic long, black-spotted spoon-shaped bill extends horizontally across the left side of the frame. The lighting is bright, highlighting the details of the bill and plumage.

A cob and pen swan at Frensham Pond with yachts in the distance and reflections on the steel blue water. The male swan has a very straight neck which can mean a state of alertness. The female swan has her neck bent over in the classic swan pose where the swan is often relaxed, calm and secure.

A bird is on a small branch with its back to us, but head turned right giving us a good profile look of a very red head, yellow beak, white line behind the red, separating it from a green body. Below it is a slice of papaya, seeds among the flesh. A bit of fern-like vegetation is at the bottom of the picture.

A red-bellied woodpecker, with a bright red cap on its head and black-and-white wings, perches on a wooden railing looking up to the left. There is little sign of any red on its belly.
@steddybirds.bsky.social92
A photo of a male redhead (Aythya americana) floating on olive green water. It's a medium-sized duck with a rounded copper-red head, bright yellow eye, pale blue-grey bill tipped in black, a glossy black chest, and a silver-gray body. It faces toward the right in diffuse lighting, gazing calmly toward the camera.
