Bird of the Day, theme 'Flower Power'

natureSep 1, 202624011,719

Today's Bird of the Day is a community photo theme called #FlowerPower, asking participants to post any bird capture with a flower in view, with an alternate theme of #BirdsOfAFeather for flocks. Submissions today emphasize colorful closeups and field scenes, featuring hummingbirds at flowers, warblers and finches perched among blossoms, plus several flock shots of cormorants and terns. Standout entries include a ruby-throated hummingbird visiting white Marlberry flowers, a barn owl flying through a meadow rimmed with blooms, and a line of cormorants stretched out along a shoreline for the alternative theme. Look through the gallery for hummingbirds feeding from barrel cactus and honeyeaters on waratah, as well as playful shots like a puffin beside an out-of-focus daisy and a goldfinch on a thistle next to a chain-link fence.

Beautiful photo! Yesterday I worked all day. It's sunny and a bit chilly this morning. They're forecasting 21°C today. What's the weather like where you are?

Good morning birders and buddies. Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #FlowerPower any bird capture with a flower in view. Hope to add some colour to our day. #BirdsOfAFeather Any capture of a flock of birds. A Grey #Heron taken last week. #birds #photography #ECK

A Grey Heron poised for takeoff, wings spread wide and its long neck extended forward. Its grey, white and black plumage stands out against a dark, blurred background, while bright pink wildflowers frame the bird on the right.

Git to the step! 😬🍻 Spectacular, Alan!

Fabulous shot as usual Alan but I do hope that isn't Purple-loosestrife. Our friend Dave M in Canada has a thing about that. Not a fan.

A flamboyance of Chilean flamingos at the Woodland Park Zoo this past weekend 🦩 #Birds #Flamingos #Flamboyance #Flamazing #BirdOftheDay #BirdsOfAFeather #Pink #Photography #Seattle

A flamboyance of Chilean flamingos all walking toward the right of the image, some have their wings up and outspread and you can see the deep dark red and black colors that are normally not visible when the birds are standing still. There is a pointed rock in the foreground that stands in water, which is also visible. Green trees are in the shadows in the background of the image.

Had to look up if the collective name for flamingos was flamboyance as it fit too well. Sometimes I learn something on Bluesky.

#Birds Alan H says today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #FlowerPower any bird capture with a flower in view. I had been wondering why so many of my begonia blossoms ended up on the ground. Chickadees were bouncing off of them in search of insects & sips of raindrops.

A small grey & black bird with its back to the camera is perched among the blush pink flowers of a begonia plant.

#FlowerPower is Alan’s @alan678.bsky.social #BirdOfTheDay theme today; any bird with a flower or flowers in the shot. I’m going with this hummingbird which has been around all summer 🌸 #photography

A flock of more than a dozen black-capped common terns flies right to left along the beach. Several sit on the sand while many more were flying out of camera range as they massed to prepare to migrate south. Photo taken in Dartmouth MA.

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme chosen by Alan is: #FlowerPower any bird capture with a flower in view Alt #BirdsOfAFeather Any capture of a flock of birds There’s an out of focus white daisy in the background of this photo. An inquisitive Puffin wonders why anyone would want to take a photo of it 🤷🏻‍♂️

A Puffin sitting on a grassy ledge looks directly at the camera. It has a white breast, black back, wings and tail and has orange webbed feet. It has an orange, yellow and blue coloured bill. There is a white daisy type flower in the top left background of the photo.
