The Met Office has published the UK, Ireland and Netherlands joint storm name list for the 2026-2027 season, which begins 1 September when meteorological autumn and the UK storm season start. The alphabetical list opens with Austen, Boelo, Chloe, Dano and Evelyn as the first five names; the names were chosen from public nominations submitted in 2025. More than 40,000 name suggestions were received for recent seasons and this marks the eleventh year of formal storm naming in the UK. Storms are named by the Met Office, Met Éireann or KNMI when forecast impacts are expected to be medium or high and when conditions could lead to an amber or red warning in the UK. Naming aims to provide a single, consistent way to share alerts about impacts from strong winds, heavy rain or snow that could cause disruption or damage. Any remnant of an Atlantic tropical storm or hurricane keeps its original name, for example ex-Hurricane Erin retained the name Storm Erin when it affected south west England in August 2025; names beginning with Q, U, X, Y and Z are not used to align with other naming conventions.
