Lanterns Episode 3 centers John Stewart origin
Apparently racists are mad John Stewart exists in Lanterns. ... imagine if they added her.
Racists forgot about the DCAU Justice League series?
God it pisses me off so bad when weenies get mad at John Stewart whenever he shows up. HE WAS THE GREEN LANTERN IN THE FUCKING 70S. Like THE Green Lantern! Being mad at history is the most profoundly stupid way to live, man.
A Green Lantern who's a black man is one thing, but a Green Lantern who's a black woman? It would cause mass hysteria. And I bet there are also racists who are mad that Jessica Cruz will be the main character of My Adventures with Green Lantern too.
I'm old enough to remember casual audiences went "Who the fuck is Hal Jordan?" when the movie dropped because they grew up with John Stewart in the cartoons...
with outfit like that they better add her asap
This has been going on since episode 1, but episode 3 has led to some… takes. And some funny clap backs lol
Chuds once again proving that they are tourists and fake fans with no media literacy skills who only care about a pop culture thing, fandom, or character if they can use them for their culture war grift and/or do a bigotry.
Wait until those assholes hear about Jessica Cruz!
They should add her. ASAP.
Far Sector movie when Gunn? Maybe my favourite DC comic? At least tied with All-Star Superman
Honestly, I’m waiting for her debut. If this is the way the franchise is going, why the heck not?
Just like they were mad when he first showed up in the comics in the 70s!
my ass grew up with John Stewart as my introduction to the Green lanterns these mfs will never stop larping
He wasn't my first (I grew up watching Superfriends reruns, and then I think Kyle had an episode in Superman: The Animated Series), but he was definitely the first I'd encountered to have real screen time and room to be fleshed out.
Right?! Me and my pasty white ass was first exposed to Green Lanterns as a whole with John Stewart and my brain immediately went "Oh cool! His powers are my favorite!" And he became my favorite character, with Batman and Flash being close behind So yeah, checkmate, racists.
Thoughts on this week's Lanterns, part of a frustrating recent trend of serialized dramas putting the present-day story on hold for an episode-length flashback:
Oooo I usually hate it but I thought they alleviated it to a degree by setting up a mystery inside the episode!
I don't feel at all frustrated. I feel satisfied and fulfilled by a well-told story.
I understand where you're coming from, but I felt this came in early enough in the season's storyline where it felt like an appropriate detour. And what a great episode this turned out to be.
I dont disagree, but the episode was really good
That was an incredible episode that made the John’s character and his relationship to Hal Jordan so much deeper. That the episode itself was entertaining and knowing how it will enrich the conflict the rest of the season, I think the flashback was a great idea.
It was a very good tv - I don’t mind when it’s good.
So far Guy Gardner has done more actual power ring shit than Hal Jordan AND John Stewart combined, and he was only in like ten minutes of somebody else's movie. This feels like sabotage.
So far we've seen Hal make bubbles and John make a bird and a watch. A fucking *watch.* I feel like Damon Lindelof is deliberately fucking with us. I'm barely hanging on as it is. Between this and Strange New Worlds I'm having a bad TV season.
*sigh* I really thought James Gunn was going to take DC away from the trend of turning colourful cosmic superheroes grey and boring.
A ludicrous supervillain origin story for John Stewart adds one needless complication to his relationship with Hal Jordan after another in this week's Lanterns. This episode was bad, and that ain't good
Great review! I had a lot of the same issues you did with this one. It also felt to me like there's a disconnect in how the show is depicting what reads (to me at least) as pretty clear systematic child abuse, but framing it as if we're seeing well-meaning parents just trying their best? Weird
i liked when the parents decide they’re going to torture their baby off an alien’s promise of him getting signed to the pros, lightning strikes like Frankenstein was just struck had the idea to play with corpses.
I laughed at the looney tunes portable hole though
All of the cosmic and ring stuff is more believable than the character development in that episode
The constituent ideas are good but it just doesn't come together
Blacksky is on a completely different vibe than this review
Tom King literally telling other writers on Lanterns that John Stewart didn’t really have an origin story in the comics outside of Da Marines and his Dad being in Da Marines, okay man it’s time it pack it up
I’ve been getting this feeling for a while from his writing, but actively avoided his behind the scenes stuff cuz it’s always horrid shit like laughing about being a torture expert, but is Tom King like…allergic to crediting writers other than himself? Like, is that why he mischaracterizes everyone?
I’m Not surprised that he’s more interested in that aspect of John than everything else. I used to like episode 3 but the more I thought about it and learned about John the less I liked it.
