Max Scherzer dominates, moves into 9th on MLB strikeout list

Max Scherzer threw seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, allowing one hit and one walk, as the Toronto Blue Jays blanked the Seattle Mariners. Scherzer’s 10th strikeout was his 3,535th career punchout, moving him past Gaylord Perry into sole possession of ninth on MLB’s all-time strikeout list. At 42 years and 34 days old, Scherzer became the oldest pitcher with a 10+ strikeout outing and one or no hits allowed since Nolan Ryan’s May 1, 1991 performance, and Scherzer and Ryan are the only pitchers 42 or older with such an outing. Blue Jays fans gave Scherzer a standing ovation after the milestone, and Scherzer demanded the ball back in a profanity-laced remark. This was Scherzer’s first scoreless start in his 33rd outing with Toronto and a season-high strikeout day for him in that game. The win helped Toronto take the series from Seattle.
