Google Maps shows 'Lake America' to U.S. users after GNIS name change

techAug 30, 20261398,227

The U.S. Geographic Names Information System has formally changed the name for "Lake Ontario" to "Lake America" within the United States. Google says it updates Maps from official government sources and is rolling this change out now, so Maps users in the U.S. will see "Lake America," users in Canada will continue to see "Lake Ontario," and users outside the U.S. and Canada will see both names. Google framed the rollout as following its policy for bodies of water with different names across countries. Social posts have pointed out mixed live behavior, including reports that some Ontario government agency websites using Google Maps data displayed "Lake America" and that searches for "Lake America" still return results labeled "Lake Ontario." Google is not presenting this as a unilateral editorial decision but as an automated update driven by GNIS data, and the map labeling is changing as the update propagates.

CNN is providing different news to different audiences. On the left, to please Bluesky users, CNN derisively refers to the change by saying "the smallest of the Great Lakes" will be "identified as Lake America." On the right, to avoid antagonizing X users, CNN makes no mention of the lake's size.

@cnn.com: Users in the United States will now see the smallest of the Great Lakes identified as "Lake America" on Google Maps, following President Donald Trump's executive order mandating the change in how the US government refers to the lake amid his tense trade war with Canada. cnn.it/4gGw7ky

This is what happens if I just go LOOK to how Google is describing that lake. If you SEARCH fo Lake America, Lake Ontario comes up (and notes that Ontario is the littlest of the Greats).

A screen shot of Lake Ontario, which makes no mention of Lake America.
