Paramount Pictures has green-lit a sequel to the 1990 racing film Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise returning as Cole Trickle and Anne Hathaway joining as a team owner and engineer. Cruise posted the announcement on X on Aug. 29 alongside a photo of himself and Hathaway next to a stockcar at Daytona International Speedway; the car bears a Cole Trickle namerail, reads "Days of Thunder" and "Summer 2028," and features green-and-yellow paint echoing the original film. Variety reports the sequel is dated for release on June 2, 2028, and will be shot for IMAX. Jonathan Levine will direct, Will Staples wrote the screenplay, and producers include Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper; Levine and Staples attended the Quaker State 400 at EchoPark Speedway in July while developing the project. Current NASCAR drivers have met with filmmakers and expressed enthusiasm: Chase Briscoe called the film "huge" for the sport and wondered whether Cruise will perform driving stunts, and Denny Hamlin said the project can bring positive awareness to NASCAR. The original 1990 Days of Thunder was directed by Tony Scott with a score by Hans Zimmer, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound, and grossed $157.9 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.
