Bird of the Day is a daily community event, and today's theme is BestOfTheMonth, asking contributors to share their favorite August 2026 bird captures. The gallery runs from tight portraits to action shots and landscape scenes, with entries showing raptors, herons, shorebirds, and backyard songbirds. Look for a whooping crane pictured alongside two sandhill cranes with the size difference clearly visible, a White Tailed Eagle encountered on two consecutive days in different locations, and a pair of Barn Owls landing in a dead tree at dusk.

Amy, you are so blessed to see this trio, with a whooper! I’ve been donating to International Crane Foundation for years because I love cranes. But to see cranes, I have to go elsewhere- we get an occasional sandhill flyover during migration, but that’s it. Thanks for posting this great image. 😊

A sub-adult White-tailed Eagle soaring overhead against a grey sky. The bird is right of centre of frame, travelling from right to left. Its wingspan stretches from the top to bottom of the shot.
The bird is visible from underneath; the rich brown plumage of the underbelly and wings has speckled of white throughout, its yellow feet and talons are tucked in just in front of its white, wedge shaped tail, the feathers of which have brown at the edges and tips. Its head and neck are also brown and it has a large, chunky bill.
The background is a uniform grey-white sky.

I love 'em, although I do strongly suspect they have the smallest brain compared to body size of any bird. That's a lovely shot, especially the lighting, Tara.

They are also the only bird that can fly within hours of hatching. I guess because Mum and Dad abandon the nest because the warmth of the compost in the mound incubates the eggs, so the chicks are defenceless. 🐣

This image shows sea eagle in full flight just above the waters of Vestfjorden, clutching a bit of herring it pulled from the water seconds earlier. Its wings are in an upstroke, so that we have an excellent view of the brown and white feathers of its chest and the underside of its wings. It clutches the herring in its trailing yellow claws, and its fierce gaze is fixed along its path of flight. Its beak is hooked and bright yellow. The eagle appears in the right two thirds of the image, and occupies most of the image vertically. The waters of Vestfjorden occupy the lower two thirds of the image vertically, while brown rocks partially smoothed by the waters appear in the upper third behind the bird. The image is finished by droplets of spray from the sea trailing behind the eagle as it flies off.
