Bird of the Day, theme 'Coastal & River'

natureAug 28, 202625913,631

Today's Bird of the Day is the Coastal & River theme, with an alternative Rocky prompt, chosen by Alan. Contributors are posting primarily bird photography focused on shorebirds and waterbirds, often showing feeding moments, reflections, juvenile plumages, and rocky perches. Concrete examples include a crisp juvenile black-bellied plover, a Roseate Spoonbill pictured ‘‘bringing it in for a hug,’’ and a tricolored heron photographed while feasting on small fish at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Look for puffins flying over water, a juvenile Red Knot on a Lake Huron shoreline, and river dippers perched on rocks that answer the alt Rocky prompt.

A crisp juvenile black-bellied plover (a.k.a. grey plover) for the #Coastal&Rivers theme of #BirdOfTheDay picked by @alan678.bsky.social In N. America this species has lost more than 50% of its population over the last 50 years mainly due to #ClimateChange #NABCI #birds #nature #photography #ECK

A stocky salt-and-pepper backed plover with stubby black bill and striking black eye in the dunes among salt grass.

Such a beautiful bird, and a great photo. 😍 It is scandalous what humankind is doing to the environment. We will, and are, suffering because of it.

Egret seems to be wondering why the great blue heron is so disheveled. For the #birdoftheday theme of #coastal&river and #rocky

A disheveled looking great blue heron stands on a rock in the river. Behind it, an out of focus egret has its head tilted to the side. The heron had been preening and shook its feathers afterward. This is before they settled completely

Aintright2

Lovely shot, Amy. He does look like he flew through a hedge. 😂

Susana1

You really going out in that get-up? - Egret, sounding like my mom

Neil Cameron1

Gorgeous shot, Amy. Those flashes of red/ginger feathers that GBHs have always intrigues me. It always looks out of place, and also first thought is often, "blood?"

Aj d'Wit (Audrey)1

Good question. But I see you answered it in the ALT text. Nice one. 👍🏼

Yvonne Redknap1

Great shot, Amy. The heron isn't happy that you took his photo before he could get himself looking good. 😂

#Birds Alan H chose today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme Alt: as #Rocky any bird capture with a rock in view. A little Pine Siskin on river rocks, had come down for a quick drink.

A small, brown streaked bird stands on smooth grey rock among many. The bird has a yellow wing bar and the breast is a cream colour with bold brown streaks.

Good morning birders and buddies. Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Coastal&River any coastal or river birds. Alt: #Rocky any bird capture with a rock in view. Please remember to support each other, it’s a community. 🙏🏼😊 A Dunlin taken two days ago. #birds #photography #ECK

A Dunlin in flight just above a rocky shoreline, wings fully spread and legs tucked beneath its body. Its finely patterned brown and grey plumage is clearly visible, with the bird flying past seaweed-covered rocks and a large rounded boulder, with calm water softly blurred in the background.

Another photo from July when the light was beautiful and the water took on amazing greens and blues.
I think the scene looks a little surreal with the way the light has caught the head of the Egyptian Goose.

Alan @alan678.bsky.social have set the themes for #BirdOfTheDay in #Coastal&Rivers and the Alt in #Rocky Hopefully this lovely swan family in our canal, from a few years back fits the first theme✨️

A lovely swam family is gliding in canal on a lovely evening a few years back.
Sadly this year I didn't have seen youngsters.on the borders from the canal is reedbed with the light from the setting sun. In the distance is a small wooden bridge.
