Leagues Cup, all semifinal spots claimed by Liga MX clubs

sportsAug 27, 202618210

Liga MX clubs claimed all four 2026 Leagues Cup semifinal spots after sweeping the quarterfinals. Toluca advanced with a 2-0 win over Austin FC in a quarterfinal played in New Jersey. América beat Columbus 2-0 in their quarterfinal, a match that drew 20,637 spectators. The last four are Toluca, León, América and Monterrey, with Toluca set to face León in Houston next Tuesday and América scheduled to play Monterrey in Carson. The result leaves no MLS teams in the tournament semifinals for the first time in Leagues Cup play and completes a 4-0 quarterfinal run by Liga MX sides.

It's confirmed: the 2026 Leagues Cup will be won by a Liga MX side. Mexican teams will also claim all three Concacaf Champions Cup spots. A disaster for MLS? ⤵️

Nah, It’s an imperfect format that led to some random results and advancements. MLS’ parity still on full display versus Liga Mx’s top heaviness. Bigger concern for MLS is that Liga Mx teams were able to turn out more fans in random locations than MLS teams in their own country.

I guess MLS took it from there, but no one knows where they took it.

The split, unbalanced tables were MLS' undoing as the cream didn't rise to the top but rewarded weaker draws. To then top that off with playing the quarters at neutral/away sites 🤷

🇲🇽 For the first time ever, there are no MLS teams in the Leagues Cup semifinals. Liga MX made a clean sweep.

Good. This either wakes up MLS owners the league has hit a wall with its outdated roster spend model, or they kick this useless competition to the curb.

Totally worth neutering the Open Cup for this.

MLS vs Liga MX in Leagues Cup Knockouts: 1) MLS at their home stadium: 12W - 12T - 2L 2) MLS at a stadium in-market, but not home: 1W - 0T - 3L 3) MLS in a neutral venue: 1W - 1T - 3L None of the knockouts for MLS teams were at their home stadium this year & the results followed.

I don't see any reason to ever do this competition again. Propping up MLS HQ's egos by its teams routing the 200 numbers on Pachuca because you made them stay at a Springhill Suites in suburban Charlotte for 3 weeks was the only reason, and that's gone

Liga MX clubs sweep MLS sides out of the Leagues Cup quarterfinals by a 9-1 count. Previous two years all four semifinalists were from MLS. Next Tuesday: Toluca vs Leon America vs Monterrey

There will be no MLS teams in the Leagues Cup semifinals for the first time in the tournament's short history, as Liga MX clubs win each quarterfinal matchup. Also means no Concacaf Champions Cup places for MLS teams via this route this year.

Leagues Cup results via FotMob, with wins for Monterrey vs Chicago Fire, León vs Real Salt Lake, Toluca vs Austin FC, and América vs Columbus Crew.

This also means it will be the first time since the expansion of the Leagues Cup format in 2023 that the final won't be an all-MLS affair.

⌛⏱️🥵 Just one week to go in the MLS summer transfer window, and even less for the big European leagues. So I took a swing through the most notable business of the past week or two, particularly some big arrivals: www.mlssoccer.com/news/embolo-...

Looking like both Leagues Cup semifinals will be Liga MX vs Liga MX. Great work everyone.

They did that at last year's leagues cup final, and Seattle spanked them in response. Then they had a collective hissy fit at the end. That was fun.

So funny that they're playing a game between Toluca and Austin in a half empty stadium in New Jersey instead of either of their home stadiums. Leagues Cup, baby!

After playing its Leagues Cup quarterfinal in north Jersey, Toluca will play its semifinal against León in Houston. América-Monterrey will be played in Carson.
