President Volodymyr Zelensky led Ukraine’s National Flag Day raising ceremony in Kyiv on Aug. 23, joined by top state officials and visiting leaders from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Norway. Zelensky highlighted the historic 1991 Flag of Independence, carried into the Verkhovna Rada after Ukraine’s Aug. 24, 1991 declaration, and called the flag “our true amulet” while saying Russia’s 2014 and 2022 invasions aim to erase Ukraine’s symbols and existence. He said the attacks are driven by “the maniacal dream of one person” and vowed the Kremlin will fail. Attending Ukrainian officials included Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk, Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi, Presidential Office Head Kyrylo Budanov, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara, and others. Zelensky thanked Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre for joining. The six Nordic and Baltic leaders arrived that morning for an NB8 summit and a Coalition of the Willing meeting and will hold bilateral and multilateral talks over a two-day visit spanning Flag Day and Independence Day.
