Collin County Judge Michael Chitty denied Karmelo Anthony's motion for a new trial Saturday in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco ISD track meet in April 2025. Anthony, 19, was convicted in June by a jury that deliberated three hours and received a 35-year sentence after rejecting his self-defense claim. The two-day hearing featured testimony from Anthony's new defense team, including trial attorney Toby Shook, who said prosecutors boxed the defense in and planned to limit what Anthony could be asked if he testified. Prosecutor Bill Wirskye, who also led the original prosecution, testified there was never an agreement preventing Anthony from taking the stand and defended the unusual trial rules as necessary because of threats and public pressure. Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said his office respects the court's decision and remains confident in the process while offering condolences to the Metcalf family. Anthony's lawyers, including Russell Wilson, said they respectfully disagree and confirmed they will continue the appeal to the Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas and pursue every legal remedy available.
