Meta smartglasses linked to secret filming and school harassment

Reporters and social posts say teen boys have used Meta-branded smartglasses to secretly film and harass girls inside middle and high schools, with some videos posted online without subjects' consent. A vendor called Ghost Metas tells the Guardian he disables the glasses' recording LED light, saying he has modified about 100 pairs and can do one in 15 to 20 minutes, which makes covert recording undetectable. Meta sold roughly 7 million pairs in 2025, and high-profile endorsements and celebrity collaborations including Kylie Jenner's AI-branded version helped normalize the device. The glasses include an LED meant to indicate recording, but Meta states the device will not record if that light is blocked or obscured, a gap exploited by aftermarket modifiers and bad actors. Reports to the Guardian describe the glasses being used to film people in homes, at beaches, at bars and on campuses, and at least one source said an incident in her house left her feeling her children were endangered. Online commentators and parents have called for bans, stricter school rules and even for physically destroying offending devices, and schools are facing pressure to clarify whether the glasses should be treated like phones and confiscated.
