A man identified as Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico County, was arrested after a shooting outside residence halls at Virginia State University early Saturday that wounded five people. Officers responded about 1:28 a.m. to the Quad Annexes and investigators later found Harris hiding in a residence hall closet; he is not a VSU student and is being held at Chesterfield County Jail on warrants for malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The five victims were taken to hospitals: a 20-year-old VSU student has been discharged, a 21-year-old man is critically injured, and a 17-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, and a 19-year-old woman suffered non-life-threatening wounds. The university enacted a campuswide lockdown that was lifted around 8:20 a.m. and said there would be a large police presence on campus. The Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Virginia State University, a historically Black public university of about 5,700 students, had just reopened residence halls about a week earlier and classes were set to begin Monday. Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she and her husband were praying for the injured and thanked first responders.
