NYT: FIFA executives were pressured to approve World Cup privatization
UEFA has said it will boycott the World Cup while Infantino is in charge, meaning there will be no European teams at the 2030 World Cup. Infantino has to go.
Infantino isn’t letting go quietly or easily. He’s busy making background deals. & some people are just as unethical as he is. Hopefully UEFA holds out.
Admittedly I didn't know much about this Infantino dude but when he gave Trump the "peace prize" then i thought what a fucker and ass licker 🤮
If UEFA stick to their guns it surely means Infantino is finished. FIFA can try to go it alone, of course, but without European teams they’re kind of offering sloppy seconds…
Or, more immediately, the 2027 women’s World Cup
Or the 2027 Women's World Cup
Women's World Cup 2027 in Brazil is the first major competition EUEFA is threatening to pull teams out of. There is also the Women's U20 World Cup next month.
‼️ ⚽️ Top FIFA officials including Matias Grafstrom, the CEO who made peace with Gianni Infantino, signed off on the plan to sell the World Cup after a secret meeting in New York the day before the World Cup final. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/06/b...
So Infantino cooked up the plan with the investor (with family ties to Trump), the bank and an insignificant financial errand boy, and no one else within FIFA knew about it until a few days before it leaked. That man is a dictator of the highest order.
I bet DJT knew about this plan before the Balogun call. Would be great if someone who actually loved football stepped forward to challenge Gianni. He promised to clean up FIFA, and he broke that promise. Also, the fact that the finance director did not sign off says a lot.
You are the bloody New York Times but can’t spell Grafström‘s name correctly which is pretty embarrassing…I know you don’t have the Ö on your keyboard so you may have to insert a special character here…
What I dont understand, working for Fifa must be a challenge anyway especially if you are at a certain level. BUT...at some point one must have thought: Ive seen a lot of shady stuff happening in my time working for Fifa, but this shit is beyond anything, enough is enough? What about ethics & morals?
I can't wait to find out what levers were promised to the investors to maximise their profit. There's much more on this story to come out. Anyone still oledging support for Infantino after this needs to be cross examined very thoroughly. Great reporting!
Mr. “democratic process” sure does spend a lot of time giving people ultimatums.
The fish rots from the head.
Keeps getting worse. Also more and more obvious that Infantino knew it was not an idea that would be supported, that there was going to be major blowback. Seems like he was hoping to sneak it through before anyone found out. Possibly not till after the contract was signed & it would be too late.
Sounds like it played out very similar to those behind creating the failed European Super League. Still of the firm belief that Infantino needs to go.
